We are sad to announce the sudden passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Saturday July 31st. 2021 at Royal Jubilee Hospital.  He is survived by his wife Barbara of 55 years, his 3 children Rebecca (Geoff), David (Nikki), and Teresa (Antony), his adored grandchildren Taylor, Matthew and Keira, his brother Lou (Claire) and nieces Amy and Courtney.  Wayne grew up in Victoria while attending St. Louis College and the University of Victoria.  He completed his BSc in Chemical Engineering from UBC and was immediately employed by Dupont Canada in Sarnia Ontario where he met and married his wife, Barbara.

They moved to North Vancouver where Wayne completed his teaching degree and a masters of education in counselling.  Wayne dedicated 36 years to the field of education. He worked in West Vancouver at Hillside, Sentinel and Caulfield schools.  He taught chemistry and later became a Vice Principal.  Thousands of students remember him fondly for his sense of humour and the hours he spent coaching teams. Wayne worked for several years as the president of the West Vancouver Teachers Association.  His final years before retirement were spent working for the BCTF as a professional development coordinator.  Wayne and Barbara came back to Victoria to enjoy their retirement.  His devotion to his wife may only have been surpassed by that to his favourite sports teams.

He exuberantly cheered on the Canucks and Blue Jays from his favourite armchair and he didn’t own a tee shirt or ball cap without one of their logos. He was as sharp as a tack and he and Barbara spent their mornings over coffee completing the New York Times Crossword Puzzles.  Wayne used his time during retirement to explore his artistic side.  He had a unique penchant for using tile, slate and cement.  He was passionate about nature and in particular trees and mountains. He gifted many interesting creations to his friends and family.  Wayne spent his time doing what he loved outside in his garden building a spectacular network of ponds and waterfalls, feeding his fish and growing his tomatoes.

Wayne was not one to sit still.  He and Barbara hiked the trails daily, greeting and talking with the neighbours along the way. For more adventurous hikes he teamed up with his lifelong friend John. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for all the care that they gave Wayne, especially those in the ER and the 8th floor.  A service will be held at Sacred Heart Church.  4040 Nelthorpe Street, Victoria on Friday, August 6, 2021 at 11:00am. Reception to follow. In leu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society  http://www.cancer.ca/British%20Columbia-Yukon/

Gone too soon is an understatement!!!
As a student of Wayne’s at Hillside Secondary School in the late 1960’s, Wayne was one of those rare teachers that cared about his students, listened to his students and he always took his precious time to make absolutely certain that one understood what it was he was teaching. In short, Wayne cared for each and every one of us no matter how long it took us to get it. No student was left behind in Wayne’s class.
Of all the teachers I had at Hillside from Grade 8 – 12 there are only two that I can say that about. We have lost a good one and what a class act Wayne was.
God Bless you Wayne in every way possible. May you rest in peace and may we meet again.
    Sincerely,
    Ken Williams

My condolences to your family. I have fond memories of Mr. Rowley, his humour, encouragement and inclusiveness of students. As my grade 12 homeroom teacher at Hillside, to inspire our Christmas spirit in 1976, my graduating year, he changed the words to a song “Up on the roof top, Santa paused ” and we rehearsed and learned it (sort of) and we sang and recorded it for the p.a. system.

Barbara, I am so very sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. Harv passed away a year ago this past April and I know what you must be feeling. It takes quite a while to feel comfortable with the new routines your life will now encompass.

I will think of you often and remember our younger years together.

Dear Barbara and family I was so sorry to read about Wayne’s passing. My thoughts and sympathy are with you all. I have so many memories of our times together at Lions Bay. It seems like yesterday that you and I were working together at the school, Barbara, and I always had such respect for Wayne during our time together in the school district. I am so happy that you had a wonderful retirement together in Victoria.
    Sincerely Catherine Allan

I was a student at Hillside when Mr. Rowley was there. I remember him as a very affable, friendly man and a well respected teacher. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

On behalf of the Facebook Page “I GREW UP IN WEST VANCOUVER”, this news hits hard for MANY MANY former students and inmates that he taught or was Home Room teacher for, I just want to point out the Wayne was one of the best and most well liked teachers at Hillside (for me and our upcoming 50th Anniversary next year to which we were on the hunt to have him there) Plus many are West Vancouver students and of course Caulfield Elementary.
And sadly this makes 2 of our MOST popular teachers we have lost in the month of July, as Ray Frost passed away a few days before.. R.I.P. Wayne.. and Condolences to all those in his family and closest friends.

Your absence has gone through me

I’m sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. It is a little strange to use his first name because he was always Mr. Rowley to me. He was my Chemistry teacher at Hillside in 1971 and 1972 and passed on his love of Chemistry to me. Mr. Rowley was one of the good ones and was an excellent teacher, personable, and funny. We always looked forward to his class. Please take some comfort in knowing that he left an abiding legacy with so many students who went on to study Chemistry at college. God bless you Mr. Rowley!
