KNOKE- Walter Bernard, passed away in Victoria at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on October 30, 2004. He was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan, March 12, 1920, and raised in Prince Albert. After joining the army, he was stationed in Victoria during WW2 where he met his wife, Sarah (nee Jamieson) and settled to become a devoted and loving father. Walter started working for the Otis Elevator Company in 1944, became the Local Representative for this company and was known as “Mr. Otis” by his many friends and clients until his retirement in 1982. In his retirement, Walter joined the Odd Fellows Lodge and enjoyed the many activities they provided. He was also an active member the Peninsula Stroke Recovery Activity Centre and the Victoria Stroke Recovery Association, sharing his knowledge of care giving and fund raising. Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Sarah and brothers Alphonse, David, Leonard, Herman and sisters Delores, Eleanore and Lindy. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Margaret (nee Shatford), sister Helen Dawson, daughter Katherine (Vic) Downard, son Len (Anne) Knoke, grandchildren, Sarah and Paxton (Rachel) Downard, Stephen and Brian (Debby) Knoke, great-granddaughter Saskia Doris Downard, and many nieces and nephews across Canada.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 5th at 1:00 pm at McCall’s Floral Chapel ( Johnson & Vancouver) with a reception to follow at McCall’s. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Walter’s memory to the Victoria Stroke Recovery Association, Box 31042, Victoria B.C. V8N 6J3.
