Irene Hack passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Saviour after a wonderful 100th birthday celebration surrounded by loving family and friends. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Erwin Hack in 2009 and is survived by her children Karen (Bob) Martin, Lynn (Bryan) Yager, Barry (Noga) Hack, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Mom was born in Kingston Ontario to Bruce and Marguerite Hitchcock. She was the eldest of 11 children and is survived by 5 of her siblings. Mom first met dad in Kingston while he was serving in the RCAF awaiting deployment to Europe. Later, upon Erwin returning from England, they were married Oct 6, 1945. They were to be together for a grand 64 years. Dad soon left the service, and they tried their hand at farming in Osoyoos. Times were difficult and after a few years, dad re-enlisted in the RCAF and relocated to Trenton Ontario where mom was able to enjoy proximity to her family and friends after living for years far away. A few years later, dad was posted to the 409 Voodoo squadron in Comox where they lived, worked and raised their family. Mom worked at the hospital, grew flowers and worked hard preserving and pickling the bountiful harvest from their very large and productive garden that dad tended to enthusiastically. Devout and people of faith, they helped build the Lutheran Church in Courtenay and continued to be actively involved for years.

Mom was a loving wife and a devoted mother to her 3 children. Eventually retiring to the South Island, mom and dad enjoyed life together in Sidney, took numerous trips abroad and were active members of Peace Lutheran church.

Mom always wanted to live at home as long as possible and succeeded in remaining there until her 99th year. Her final year was spent living at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Long Term Care Home where she enjoyed visiting with family and spending time in the beautiful gardens. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of SPH for their exceptional and dedicated care of mom during her final year.

She was loved, cherished and will be dearly missed and remembered.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Peace Lutheran Church, 2295 Weiler Avenue, Sidney, BC on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPH Long Term Care Home, or a charity of your choice.

Irene and Erwin have been my neighbours at the Sidney townhouse for many years. I was so impressed by their vegetable garden when I moved in in 2002.
Irene was an inspiration in how to accept the restrictions of aging, and yet find ways to have life work as well as possible for her.
I miss her and it will always be “ Irene’s place” for me.
