In the early hours of May 18, 2024, our beloved father and husband Simon passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home surrounded by the love of his family and pets. He was predeceased by his mother Jean Anderson nee Renshaw (Lorry, deceased) and father Allen Gichero (Elisabeth). Simon’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his wife Vicki; children Mitchel (Aleena), Jacquelynne (James), and Joshua; cherished grandchildren Lincoln, Theodore, Cecelia, and Quintyn; and sisters Rebecca (Gilbert) and Njeri (Philip), and their daughters.
Simon was born on March 9, 1961 in Manchester, England. When he was 12 years old, his mother Jean immigrated to British Columbia, Canada with Simon and his sister Rebecca. They lived throughout the Lower Mainland, and some of his fondest memories were growing up in Port Coquitlam, BC. As a young man, he moved to Christina Lake, BC, to help run the family business, JC’s General Store, Mini Golf & Arcade. In order to see the world and indulge his love of adventure, Simon enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1983. After basic training, his military career brought him to Victoria, BC, which he would consider home for the rest of his life. During his time in the Navy, Simon met his first wife Cindy with whom he had his firstborn child Mitchel. Later he met his partner Michelle and they welcomed two children, Jacquelynne and Joshua. Simon met his current wife Vicki in 2002. He served in the Navy as a marine electrician for 25 years and retired in 2009 at the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.
After retiring from the Navy, Simon co-owned Two Thumbs Up Video located in Langford, BC from 2009 to 2015, and continued to work in naval-related careers until receiving his cancer diagnosis in 2019. He had successful cancer treatment and was in remission and improving over the next few years. Sadly, his health started to decline again at the end of 2022, and he spent much of the next year and a half fighting valiantly against his illness.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the numerous medical professionals whose efforts throughout his health journey gave him more time with his loved ones.
Simon had many passions and hobbies throughout his life. He was an avid motorcyclist and loved to explore by taking road trips and traveling to other countries. Some of his favourite things to do included spending time in the outdoors camping, fishing, boating, and off-roading. He was a history buff, specifically WWII, and enjoyed reading, watching documentaries and movies, and playing a spirited game of Trivial Pursuit. Simon also loved listening to music and his extensive vinyl record collection, entertaining, cooking, and gardening. He took great pride in his home, always wanting to create a fun gathering space for all to enjoy.
More than anything, he valued time spent with family and friends. Simon was the eternal host and life of the party, and deeply impacted the lives of those around him. He will be missed dearly by the countless friends and family whose lives he touched with his infectious smile and boundless charisma. None more so than his loving and devoted wife Vicki, with whom he shared over two decades of his life and was always by his side. Through Simon’s guidance and example, his children and grandchildren, his proudest accomplishments, live lives full of laughter and joy, albeit made dimmer by his loss.
Simon we love you now, and forever. Fair Winds and Following Seas.
A celebration of life is to be announced at a later date.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.
