Sarah (Sadie) Gallagher (nee Montgomery) passed peacefully on May 20, 2023 with family at her side. She was born on November 6, 1922 in Molenan (Londonderry), Northern Ireland.

Predeceased by her six sisters, brother, her husband Bobby (1988) and daughter Sandra (2012).

Sadie’s life in Ireland was full of family and love. As a young woman, she worked at the Tillie & Henderson shirt factory. She met her husband Bobby at the dance halls in Londonderry, and they married in 1948. Bobby moved to Victoria, BC in 1952 and Sadie followed in 1953 with young daughters, Sandra and Hilary. The family moved to their Balfour Ave. home in 1960, with son Rob, born five years later. Sadie lived in the family home until her 95th birthday. Her door was always open to welcome friends and family with a smile, a hug, a plate of biscuits and a hot cup of tea.

Sadie worked at the Hudson’s Bay for over 25 years.  In her retirement, she continued to be a welcoming face on Senior’s day into her 80’s.  She stayed active into her 90’s; swimming at the Oak Bay pool, and as a longtime member of St. John’s Anglican Church and the Eastern Star.  She celebrated her 100th birthday in November with family and friends and of course, a cake from the Dutch Bakery.

Sadie will be remembered for her warmth, her determination, her caring nature, her love of family and the love that she showed everyone that had the pleasure to know her. She left the world as she lived it, surrounded by love and family. Sadie will be sadly missed by her daughter Hilary (Bill) and son Rob, grandchildren Meghan (Lindsay), Erin (Brett), Ryan (Melissa) and Courtney (Matt) and great-grandchildren (Kenzie, Declan, Lane, Lexie, Quinn, Grady, Ella, Kallie), her family in BC and Northern Ireland, and all those blessed to have known her.

Service will be held on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Everyone I knew @ The Bay loved Sadie Gallagher! When you retired, you were missed. Shen Sheila and I started up the Retires lunch as The Bay stopped the Retirees Tea, you were there and kept coming until you could not make it any more, sometimes with help of friends and daughter. Miss your smiley face!

We will miss you, Sadie. You were always so kind and took such a genuine interest in other people, always asking about what they were doing and remembering them on their birthdays and holidays. You had a wicked sense of humour and we always enjoyed your feigned surprise and laughter at the end of a good joke. You were also a mean card shark, never hesitant to take someone out unless it was one of your grandchildren who would suddenly be dealt back in or acquire some mystery money to stay in the game. Your love of family was legendary and we always enjoyed your presence at family dinners. One can only wish to live the life that you lived, through over 100 years of history on two continents and so much time enjoyed with family and friends. It will be nice for you to finally reunite with your parents, siblings, Bobby, Sandra and the rest of your family in the next chapter of your journey. You touched us and so many other people in such a special way – we will remember you and carry you in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Enjoy your peace. Love Dave, Joanne, Jordan, Riley, Jacob and Harper.

My heart is sad that Sadie is no longer with us. We worked together at Hudson’s Bay and became life long friends. We visited a lot and travelled together, too. Many laughs and good talks through the years. I wish all the best to her whole family. I will be at the service in Victoria. Mary Bradford in Nanaimo

Sending love to all the family as you mourn the loss of Sadie. I was so happy to have had a visit with her in February. She was a remarkable woman. I will be in Victoria for the service.
