Sally Franklyn Stencel (nee Christie; a.k.a. Oma, Sassy), 95. Much beloved matriarch and confidante. Survived by daughters and partners Beatrice/George Spiteri, Jacqueline/Brian Dillon, grandchildren Rebecca and Alex; brother, Roy/Barb Christie and nieces/nephew/friends across the country. Predeceased by darling husband George (2009), sister Ardith/Reg and parents Franklin and Beatrice Christie.
Hailing from N.S., Sally was a proud Cape Bretoner, though she spent most of her life in Victoria, BC, and Ottawa, ON. She left an early career in Dr. Hunter’s medical office to take on her cherished roles as wife, mother and grandmother. She could not have been a more loving and supportive champion. Embracing the mantle of ‘chief cook and bottle washer’, Sally was an avid homemaker, consumer advocate, sports fan, nature lover and proud Canadian. Her appreciation for classical music and literature inspired her daughters to value the integrity of notes and words and the power of narrative voice. Sally’s enthusiasm for rising to every occasion found her in goal for family soccer matches, a fearless hockey defenceman on the ice, road and in the garage, an accomplished dancer and figure-skater with husband George, a skilled thespian recently performing as one of the witches in Macbeth, Queen of ‘coaster’ frisbee and stair-surfing on the mattresses, as well as a gracious and generous hostess. We remain in awe of her fierce appreciation for life, her positive outlook and her gift for seeing the beauty around us.
We give heartfelt thanks to Leona Gibb for filling her last years with music, stories, walks, drives and high adventure. We are grateful to her GP, Dr. Douglas Hartford, for his care during her years in Victoria, the amazing care staff at Amica Douglas House, the professionals at The Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Sarah Shaw.
We will greatly miss Mum’s dry wit, wise counsel, youthful spirit, and sense of ‘play’. In her memory, we urge you to engage: hug someone, read, listen to music, donate, volunteer, pick blackberries, buy shoes, crochet a sweater, turn on the computer, smell the gardenias, reach out!
Condolences may be offered to the family below.
