Rod Smith, husband, father, Papa, brother, slipped away on November 24, 2023, at peace. He had an interesting and varied life, living in Vancouver, Calgary, Paris, Kelowna and Victoria, enriched by family and friends he met along the way. He worked in a shoe store, washed dishes at a mountain resort, drove bus in Banff National Park, and practiced law in the fields of criminal, corporate and commercial, legal aid, and in house counsel. He hiked, climbed mountains, skied, painted, camped with his family, traveled, walked and gardened. He drew strength and guidance from the traditions of the Anglican church and Zen Buddhism.
He leaves behind Maggie, his wife of 48 years, three children, Robin (Scott), Lyndsay, and Stu, his best and favourite granddaughter Kira, two brothers, and nephews, nieces, and cousins. He will be missed for his stories and wit.
Thanks to all the medical people and care aides who cared for him at the BC Cancer Centre, Royal Jubilee Hospital and Island View Place Care, and heartfelt thanks to the support of friends and family in the last few months. We couldn’t have done it without you.
The family will have a small private gathering at the disposition of his ashes, with a celebration of life to follow later, in the New Year.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

“It is because of Love that we grieve, and because of Love, also, that we are comforted in our sorrow.”
Sincere heartfelt wishes for your peace and comfort at this time. I will be among those who will miss Rod’s wit and humour.
