Robert passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on December 11, 2023 at the age of 62 after a 16-year struggle with prostate cancer. He kept his diagnosis to himself and his wife (Lynette) all these years, as he did not want to worry his family and friends.

Robert was born in Germany and spent numerous summers visiting his uncle Klaus and family in Victoria in his late teens and early 20s. He eventually immigrated to the capital in 1994. He was a lifelong soccer fan and would often get up in the middle of the night or early in the morning to watch Euro qualifiers, World Cup games or Bundesliga matches (no, they could not be recorded and watched later!). He became a fan of hockey when he moved to Canada and followed the Vancouver Canucks faithfully.

Robert had a kind heart and would go above and beyond to help anyone who needed it. He had a witty sense of humour and enjoyed British comedies and anything else that made him laugh (including the somewhat obscure jokes of his brother-in-law Steve). He was taken too soon and will be greatly missed.

A service will be held in the Sequoia Centre, at McCall Gardens 4665 Falaise Drive, on Saturday, December 16th, 2023, at 10:00 am, and an informal Celebration of Life will be arranged in the new year.

Thank you to Dr. Joanna Vergedis of the BC Cancer Centre for her kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, please raise a glass in memory of Robert.

Auf Wiedersehen Junior.

To realize that Robert is no longer with us makes me deeply sad. Robert was my mentor when I was young and a friend for more than 35 years. Unfortunately, after he emigrated to Canada, we saw and spoke to each other far too rarely, which I regret all the more now. My deepest and most sincere condolences go to his wife and all his family. Mach’s gut Robert, mein alter Freund!

Robert was like a son to Klaus and Anne and brother to Annette and Katrina. May he now rest easy. We will miss him dearly.
