It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our mother Rae Garvey (nee Kennedy) on July 15th, 2023 in Victoria, B.C. Having fearlessly and with great dignity fought ALS for the last year, she passed peacefully with her four children at her side. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years James (Jim) Garvey, and is survived by her children Scott (Tamara), Greg (Glenda), Deborah (Geoff) and Laura-Lyne, as well as grandchildren Kayla, Jonathan (Alex), Samantha, Nicole, Madeleine, Michael, Matthew, Jessica and great-granddaughter Eleanor.
Rae was born in Regina and attended and graduated from the Regina General Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. She was active in her Nursing career while raising her four children, and later in life founded and ran her own consulting company focussed on women’s health issues.
Rae lived out her final years in Victoria after having spent the previous 40 years living in Edmonton. Always proud of her prairie roots she adapted well to the west coast lifestyle where she enjoyed many outdoor activities. She was an avid golfer after retirement and met many of her close friends in Edmonton and Victoria through her love of the game.
In lieu of flowers, Rae would have appreciated donations be sent to the ALS Society of BC.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Marnie Kushnerenko To the entire Garvey Family. I am so sorry to hear this news. So many of my best memories include your Mom. She was with us when my mom took her last breath. I know that Mom was waiting for her in a golf cart at the pearly gates to play a round. Love to you all.

Pat Fench I extend my sincerest condolences to all of Rae’s family. Rae worked for me at NorQuest College in the Health Services Unit for a period of time, and along with being an excellent nurse, she was great fun to work with. Her kindness to students and staff was much appreciated, and I have many fond memories of the time we spent together at the College. She loved her family deeply and was incredibly proud of all your accomplishments. I am so sorry she had ALS, but I know you all would have supported her lovingly. May your memories become treasures to cherish.

Rev. Dr. Gordon Oaks Dear Scott, Gregg , Deborah, Laura Lynn:
How saddened I was to hear of dear Rae’s death and all she and all of you went through in the past year. I have such warm memories of Jim and Rae and all of you. Your grandmother Kaye Garvey was such a dear friend of my mother Elsie. They were classmates in nursing along with Grace Perkins. We had so many fun times together. We were all very young then. My connection with your family continued in Edmonton when I was minister at St. Paul’s. I believe I conducted your Dad’s service and your marriage ceremony Scott. Your mom Rae was a very special lady and I will remember her fondly. Blessings and love to you all. Your parents were special people and I felt fortunate to have known them.
