Michael (Mike) Orry Gelling passed away peacefully the morning of Monday, September 23rd, 2024, in Victoria, BC, with his loving wife of 60 years, Mauraine Gelling (Scarr), by his side. Predeceased by his parents and sister Katherine, Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a gentle and caring father to his six boys and was much loved by their families: Rick and Lyn, their boys Ryden and Rylan; Michael and his children Jessica, Katie, Galen, Allison and William; Charles and Ashley, their boys Kai and Roman; Corry and Lea, their boys Noa and Sawyer; Russell and Lisa, their children Ryleigh, Orry, Rowan, Isla and Brynn; Randy and Geraldine; and his great-grandchildren via Jessica and her husband Mike Marchand: Lochlan, Lili and Lennon. He will be dearly missed by his sisters Audrey and Al and their four children; Ann and Ron and their son; Rhona and her two children.

Mike married into the large Scarr/Ashe family of eight boys and four sisters, plus five half-brothers who hold fond memories of him as do their children, Mike’s numerous nieces and nephews. He made his living as a carpenter in construction and enjoyed family life over the years with his wife and their boys as they grew up and started families of their own. He spent time in the garden and was a keen reader of history and politics. In his retirement he helped his boys and other family members construct and renovate their homes and gardens. He was well known for his kind and outgoing nature.

In his last months, Mike was cared for at the Jubilee Hospital by many wonderful staff, including his nurses Jake, Caroline and Dr. Shannon Wong. ‘Death leaves a heartache no one can heal/love leaves a memory no one can steal.’ Donations in his memory can be directed to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. A celebration of life will take place in the spring, time and date to be determined.

When I think of Mike, the first thing that comes to mind is Maureen by his side, and his pride in his boys and their families. He was so proud of his family, and rightly so. Hard working, honest and a straight shooter. Sending our thoughts and love to all the Gelling family.
