It is with great sadness that we announce May Hok Jang, aged 65, has passed away on April 29, 2021.
May was born on November 25, 1955 in Hong Kong. She moved to Canada in 1974 to start a new journey in her life, where she would live in Duncan for 16 years, later moving to Chemainus and then to Victoria to be near her children.
She was very strong and independent, never afraid to take on new experiences. She opened many businesses on her own, without the knowledge or experience but was always willing to learn. We are very proud of her strength and courageousness. Cooking was one of her passions. She loved to cook, collecting many cookbooks to build her personal recipes. She also loved to travel, especially flying back to Hong Kong to visit her family.
May was a kind, thoughtful, and loving soul. She will be greatly missed and will forever be in our hearts. May’s final resting place is at the Mausoleum in the Royal Oak Burial Park.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Bing & Cindy, Randy & Liz, Wendy & Dave, Trudy & Dave, and Sandy & Kevin We only just heard about losing May (who we always affectionately called ‘Aunt May’). She was a lovely person who radiated with warmth and generosity. Our lasting memories of Aunt May will be of visiting her at her store in Chemainus and how delighted she was to see family and friends and her waving goodbyes until we were out of sight. Her smile always brightened the whole room.
Our family sends our heartfelt condolences to Jeanette and Steven. No matter how old we are, it is never easy to lose a parent.
Love,
Bing Jang and family

Dear Aunt May,
I often recall when I went to Victoria and met Aunt May, she always treated me like her close family and took care of me. That was a wonderful act of kindness which I will never forget, and which demonstrates the type of person that Aunt May was.

Tung Tung Aunt May,
I’m sorry that I didn’t come to see you one last time. I know you wouldn’t blame me for that as we are always in your heart. It’s heartbreaking to let you go. I can’t imagine going to Victoria again and not seeing you. Every time I came to Victoria, you gave me the warmest welcome. I still remember the time that you comforted me with a big hug when I lost my grandpa. You were so excited to show me your home city when I came. Even it’s just a small city but your existence made it big enough for me to stay.
I know you’d hope that I can live a fullest life and I promise you I will. Words can’t explain how great and how nice you are. You will always stay within our hearts. We will definitely meet again in the unknown future. I will always love you and keep our memories deep in my heart.

Jordon Tonge I never had the opportunity to meet May. I am fortunate enough to have known her daughter Jeanette for several years. Through Jeanette I heard many stories showing May’s strength and charming character, I felt like I knew May well, and felt privileged to hear these stories and considered her a part of my life.
Jeanette I am sorry for your loss, it is everyone’s loss. Your mom was a blessing who touched many people.
