Loving mother, devoted grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away March 31st after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mary is survived by her son Michael Frampton (Megumi), daughter Kelly Wakeham and grandchildren Kieran, Logan, Jasmine and Lily. She is also survived by her brother Michael Sails and sister Marnie Wingham (UK), her nieces and nephews, Andrew, Alanna, James, Patrick and Trevor Sails and Brittany and Ryan Wingham. She was predeceased by her much loved younger brother, Steve and older brother Jack (in infancy).

Mary attended St. Ann’s Academy, St. Patrick’s School and Oak Bay High School in Victoria. She worked as Department Secretary and Assistant to the Chair in the Biology Department, University of Victoria, for over 26 years. She was also very active in her Union, CUPE 951. It was during this time at UVic that Mary pursued her post secondary education, obtaining a degree in Sociology and Psychology, graduating as a mature student in 1998. Mary especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, all of whom she held most dear. Thank you Dr. Leah Norgrove, Dr. Sylvie Tellier, staff at BCCA and all the staff at Victoria Compounding Pharmacy for your care during Mary’s life.

It was Mary’s wish that there be no service. Please offer up a prayer.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Mary was such a kind and supportive person – helped me in so many ways in the Biology Department. Her smile was so welcoming. I was so happy to chat with her at the last Xmas Party – smile just the same. Fond memories.

Many thoughts and prayers to all the family. I met Mary during the U Vic language trip to France,
in 1999. She was one of the best parts of it! Although we didn’t meet often enough, I looked forward
to each visit we had. She was a wonderful person and an amazing woman. I will always miss her.

Mary was a kind gentle soul who never had a bad word to say. Beautiful inside and out and brave to the end. She lives on in our hearts until we meet again.

I first knew Mary as my supervisor when I worked in the Biology Department at UVic. Once she retired, we became friends, up until her passing. We met regularly and shared stories of our families and our lives over tea and goodies.
Mary had a very special demeanour- her calmness, outlook on life and her unassuming ways is something you don’t see much of in todays world. So many folks get caught up in the frenzy and flurry of life. Not Mary.
Everyone who knew Mary, will miss her. When I walk by her street, or building, I will pause and reflect and be glad that I knew her.
I send good wishes and healing to her family and friends alike.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. She was such a central person in the Biology Department for so many years, and was always ready to help students and faculty. She always had a radiant positive personality. Greatly missed. My condolences to Michael, Kelly and other family.

I am offering my condolences to Mary’s family on behalf of my husband Ian Thornton who died last May. Ian was a senior lab instructor in the Biology department for many years. He held Mary in the highest regard for her administrative skills, her cheery attitude and kindness to all.

So sorry to hear of Mary’s passing and send my condolences to her family. Though I have not seen Mary for many years, we were close friends when we attended St. Patrick’s school in Victoria. Mary had the sunniest and sweetest disposition and a great smile which I was still so evident in this picture of her. She played a great game of baseball and could run the bases like lightening!I am so glad that she had such a full life with family she loved and who loved her. Blessings to you all.

To Kelly (whom I met several times over the years) and Micheal, I am saddened to hear about Mary. Mary was my supervisor for many years in the Biology office. I remember on her 40th birthday, her computer sang “Happy Birthday” to her — programed from faculty member in the dept. How Mary was tickled pink by this! After her retirement, we kept in touch at least twice per year– her birthday and Christmas and we always reminisced about the dept and then talked about our children and grandchildren. Mary was a very kind and loving person, she shall be missed greatly by all that knew her.

Many happy memories of Mary in her role as the U Vic Biology Department Secretary. Her sunny disposition, and exceptional secretarial skills were very important in the day to day life of the department for students and staff alike.

My sweet gentle friend Mary was first spotted in her bright red Burberry . I was on my way to start grade 7 at St. Pat’s. The school uniform was a navy blue coat. She caught my attention! I had just moved to Victoria where I was to start friendships that have lasted since 1958. Mary lived just down the street on Foul Bay Road. We did everything together until life sent us off in different directions. I returned to live here in 1989. Although we rarely wrote and had very different lives while I was away we start meeting up again. She (and others) convinced me that I should go to university. Her suggestion was specific: go see Nels Granewall, the Financial Aid officer at Uvic. She and I were to meet most days at Uvic or talk on the phone. Mary was a person of enormous depth and love. She cared so much for her family and friends. She always went to battle for the underdog. Mary was deeply caring and compassionate.

Mary was a wonderful neighbour and became a good friend. I will miss our visits over a cup of tea. She was thoughtful and kind. I will think of her as I enjoy reading through her vast Ian Rankin library she so kindly left to me.
I will happily offer up a prayer for her. Take comfort in knowing she is at peace.

Michael and Kelly, I was so sorry to read the obit this morning. I have so enjoyed your Mother’s friendship and counsel over the years. Know that there wasn’t one visit I had with her, that both you and your children were not mentioned (with much affection and pride!) I will miss her, but was blessed to know her.

  • George Mackie

To Michael and Kelly, my deepest sympathy. I will never forget your mother. Mary was a lovely woman.

I’m so very sorry to know that we’ve lost Mary. I knew her from our shared years at Oak Bay High and then for many, many years in the UVic Biology Department where she was a wonderful ray of sunlight and such a help to all of us in the Department with so many things.
