Mary Elaine Pollock (née Tuft) passed away peacefully on February 24, 2020 in her beloved Sidney, BC. She was born on February 7, 1931 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.
Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ron; her daughters, Elaine (Hugh) Mitchell and Cheryl (John) Anderson; and her grand-kitties, Morgan and Tase. She will also be missed by her large extended family, many friends and former students in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Ethiopia and Canada.
Mary’s career teaching ballet led her to Pittsburgh in 1956, then Toronto and Banff, where she met Ron – they bonded over a cow costume for Frederick Ashton’s Façade. They married in 1962 and lived in Toronto, Vancouver, Stratford, Winston-Salem NC, Victoria and Ottawa. Mary continued to teach, everywhere they lived. Finally, they retired to the seaside, Mary’s long-held dream, living on Pender Island and then in Sidney since 1994. Throughout her life, Mary loved ballet, gardening, animals and travelling, and, of course, being with her family.
The family wish to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Mary during her last two weeks at Victoria General and Saanich Peninsula Hospitals. They would especially like to thank Dr. Keith and his team for their good care over the years and the many people who kept her happy and healthy in her later life.
