MARTIN, Alice February 17, 1916 to June 6, 2007 Alice Josephine Martin (Meagher) was born in the small prairie town of Radisson, Saskatchewan. She moved to Victoria in 1940, and in 1942 married Ron, with whom she enjoyed 64 years of marriage, until his death on December 3, 2006. At that time she moved to Nanaimo to be closer to her sons, Michael (Pam), and Tom (Lana). Alice was predeceased by her sister, Ivy Smith (Ken), and survived by her sisters, Mary Pearl Godefroy, and Pat (Gerry) Neely; as well as her grandchildren, Tom, Mickel, Michael, and Nathaniel; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Like so many who move from the prairies to the west coast, Alice embraced the lifestyle of summers at Parksville, living in a trailer with the family, cooking oysters just picked from the shore. In their later years, Ron and Alice changed their beach lifestyle for a condominium in Hawaii where for many years they spent their winters. She was a woman always with a kind comment, a keen sense of humour and a strong sense of pride of her sons and their accomplishments. She volunteered her services at her sons’ schools which ultimately led to her working for many years as a School Aide at Frank Hobbs and Sir James Douglas elementary schools, where her common sense and outgoing nature endeared her to staff, students and parents alike. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, June 14 at 3 pm at McCalls Funeral Home in Victoria. No flowers by request of the family. If desired, donations may be made in Alice’s name to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, 4480 Oak St., Room B321, Vancouver, V6H 3V4, or the charity of your choice.
