Adele passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on April 6, 2023, with daughters Kara Woodward and Hilary Woodward at her side. Born on July 1, 1933 in North Vancouver, Adele was the oldest of the three children of Claude and Isabel Stonehouse. The Stonehouse family were of United Empire Loyalist stock and Adele’s paternal grandparents came to BC from Nova Scotia in 1905.
Adele spent her early years in North Vancouver, then moved to Prince Rupert for two years during WWII where her father worked as health inspector. From there she moved with her family to Victoria where she met her future husband, Chris at the age of 15. Married to Chris in 1955, they spent 66 years together raising their family and enjoying their grandchildren and many beloved cats through the years.
Adele is survived by her two daughters, Kara Woodward (Philip Williams) and Hilary Woodward (John Cain) and grandchildren, Isabel, Rhys, Grace and Maeve. She is survived by brother Alan Stonehouse and sister, Joyce Gathright and numerous nieces and nephews to whom she was “Auntie Adele”. She is predeceased by husband, Chris in 2021. Adele is also survived by Frank Woodward and Connie (Woodward) Roberts and several dear friends and neighbours who meant a great deal to her.
Adele will forever be remembered by her family for her wisdom, advice and wry sense of humour. She could always be counted on to tell you like it is, but with kindness. Adele was keenly interested in the world around her and was the person to ask if you wanted to know something about anything. She was an avid reader and never passed on the opportunity to stop at a garage sale for that special find.
The family would like to recognize and thank the staff on 8 South at the Royal Jubilee Hospital including family friend, Pat Smith and give special thanks to Dr. Benjamin How for his care and kindness to Adele over many years. July 1st would have been our mum’s 90th birthday. Happy Birthday Mum!
No service by request. A family gathering will be held in the near future to remember both Adele and Chris.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Thinking of you Joyce, Alan, and families. I remember Adele from when we were kids. She was always so classy and warm … and so grown up it seemed to us squirts. Take care in this time of missing.
