Marjorie passed away, peacefully at VGH on July 12, 2022. She was born in Hayfield, MB on April 25, 1931 and  was raised in Boissevain, MB.  Predeceased by her husband William, parents, Robert and Lily Anderson, and sister Dorothy Maxwell.  Mom is survived by her daughter Heather Buchan (Wayne Downs), niece Karen McFayden (Brian) (Jayne & Cody Bush) and nephew Tom Maxwell (Kim). Sister Doris Denney of Viking, AB.

Marjorie met her husband Bill  at a New Years Eve party in  December 1952. It was love at first sight and they were married July 25, 1953 and moved to Victoria, BC. They were together for 66 years.  Marjorie and Bill traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bali, and many cruises with Holland America, with the longest one being 21 days from New York to Victoria.

Marjorie trained for Nursing at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB and worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Pediatrics and Emergency until 1956 when her daughter Heather was born. She returned to work for Dr. Rueben Matiko, and retired at the age of 65 from the Cloverdale Medical Clinic.

She enjoyed over 40 years of friendship with the Victoria Gyros’, playing canasta, hosting dinner parties, and travel to installations ceremonies. Her interests were Local Artists, needlepoint, knitting, theatre, music, and she was an avid reader.

Marjorie will be missed by so many-her wisdom and words of advice, soft healing hands, kind heart, her love of dogs and giver of big hugs. She was always there to listen.

We would like to thank the VGH 4th floor South, Doctors and Nurses for the wonderful care during her final days.

Words cannot express the loss that is felt right now. Because of Mom I know the meaning of true love, dedication to family and friends. She is now at peace and with Dad.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Heart and Stroke foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 10:30 am.  McCall Gardens , 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria BC.

My husband Don and I met Bill and Marjorie in the 60’s through the Travelers’ Association, and we became fast friends, and spent so many happy hours with them. They were famous for their hospitality and generosity, which included often giving us a bed overnight when we came to Victoria, and giving my son-in-law a great place to live while he attended college in Victoria. Marj was a kind, lovely person who will be so missed by everyone – most especially by Heather and Wayne, to whom we send our sincere condolences.

When I moved to Victoria at the age of 18 and married my life partner I had to select a doctor. In the Kootenays I had a lovely Japanese doctor so looked for the same after my move. Dr. Matiko sounded Japanese to me so I phoned and this lovely lady said they would be pleased to have me as a patient. Surprise, he wasn’t Japanese but a great big blonde gentleman. On my first visit I was greeted like family by a lovely, gracious lady who said, “Just call me Marg”. Over the years “Just Marg” shared my births, my sorrows and many good times. She was never too busy to greet you and ask how those little ones were doing and said she would love to see them. During one’s lifetime (I am now 84) you meet many special people and my lasting memory of “Just Marg” has to be high on the list. Rest in peace and know you are remembered by many.

Deepest sympathy to you, Heather and Wayne. You certainly honoured Marjorie by spending time with her at fabulous events and activities and were such a very supportive daughter and son-in-law during Marjorie’s life. I observed your care in the tribute you gave to her, as you shared a home together with Marjorie in the past few years. I hope you are sustained by all the happy memories you helped create for Marjorie. It was clear that your devotion and sharing of life with your Mum and Mum-in-law was given in the most generous ways. I hope you find some peace in the days ahead, knowing your Mum is over all her pain and resting in peace now. Much love, Daphne

I feel that her passing on your birthday was her way of celebrating the happiest day of her life… the day you were born. She was always so proud of you and loved you so. You and Wayne must be at great peace knowing how beautifully you cared for her in her last years. Hope to see you soon. Lots of love…….

Dear Heather and Wayne. There is no greater love than the love of a mother. She cared for you, nurtured you and always wanted the best for you. This type of love transcends time as it is eternal. Coming home to your Dad will bring her comfort, peace and a close fellowship with the Lord. Your parents will now watch over you together as you continue on through this life and they will be there to greet you in the next. May you be comforted by the thought that you will see them again and they are both no longer in any pain. God Bless.
