With great sadness, the family of Marie “Louise” Cooke (nee Dean) announce her passing on October 21, 2021, at the age of 89 with the love of her family surrounding her.
Louise was born in Bearsden, Scotland in 1932. At age 18, while attending the University of Glasgow’s “freshie camp” she met her future husband, Iain Cooke. She graduated as a Chartered Accountant and married in 1957. Shortly after Louise and Iain married, they immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba as Iain had accepted a position as a physics professor. They lived in Manitoba for about 17 years, began raising four children and enjoyed activities including skiing, skating, curling, playing bridge, and Scottish Country dancing. They built a cottage on Wallace Lake where the family spent many summers. Seeking a lifestyle change, in 1977 Louise and Iain moved the family to Victoria, BC where they would live for another 44 years. Louise opened her own business, Dayco Services Ltd., and offered accounting and bookkeeping services to local businesses in the area. Sailing became a big part of their lives and they frequently spent their summers exploring the waters around Vancouver Island. One summer, Louise and Iain circumnavigated Vancouver Island on their sailboat, the Anna-Therese.
Louise had a natural curiosity and love of learning and tried her hand at numerous hobbies through the years including gourmet cooking, knitting, crocheting, painting, hydroponic gardening, jewelry making, needlework, and sewing. It was no surprise when she decided one year to build her own kayak. Louise was the happiest working in her garden, reading a good book and travelling. Louise was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sister Beryll, her children Fiona (Mark), Ross (Dhorea), Heather, Bruce (Lisa) as well as grandchildren Sean, Brendan, Chloi, Jossh, Keegan, and Sebastian. She was pre-deceased (2019) by her devoted husband of 61 years, Iain.
A special thank-you to the wonderful people at the Sidney Care Home for their loving kindness and care.
As per her request, there will be no formal service. Condolences may be offered to the family below.
