Ernest Malanchuk passed away at home on March 5, 2021, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family. Ernie was born on September 12, 1933 in Worsley, Alberta. He lived in Alberta’s Peace River Country before moving to Victoria in 1980 with his wife, Mary.
Ernie was a man of many talents. At different times he owned a hotel, a lumberyard and a carwash/gas station. As a contractor, Ernie built a number of houses, including several that his family called home. He used his carpentry skills to build a camper that they enjoyed on summer holidays and beautiful wooden furniture.
A talented musician who played the saxophone and violin, Ernie loved to listen to a wide variety of music. Other favourite hobbies included photography, gardening, hiking, birdwatching, reading, and in-depth political and economic discussions about current events. A lifelong passion was travelling to explore places near and far. He especially enjoyed adventure travel: landing in a new country, renting a car and heading out on the road. This led to a number of interesting adventures and many great stories. His favourite city to visit was Rome; favourite country was Russia.
Ernest will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Mary, son Wade, daughters Maureen (Randy) and Marilyn (Greg), grandchildren Darcy (Celeste), Carissa (Joel) and Courtney (Michael), and great grandchildren Brixton and Eleanor.
Heartfelt thanks to Ernie’s healthcare teams, especially Dr. Macpherson and Dr. Abed and their teams, as well as the nurses, OTs and care aides from VIHA, for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Victoria Hospice Society https://www.victoriahf.ca/donatenow/ would be greatly appreciated.
