It is with sadness & relief we announce the peaceful passing of Leopold Kohl, our father (Papa) on December 21, 2021 in his 93rd year.
Leo was born in Vienna Austria, & lived in a small village of Pernitz Austria with his parents, Franz & Hilda Kohl, siblings Erna, Trude, Franzi & Fritzi. He was the second eldest of five children.
Leo was predeceased by his young son Leopold and his loving wife Franziska.
He is survived by his children, Hannes (Terry), Kurt (Pat), Hildi (Dave), Frank, Diana (Stephan), many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, only surviving sibling, his brother Fritz (Rose)& many relatives in North America & Austria.
Having survived WW2, he & his brother-in-law Rupert Panzenboeck decided to immigrate to Canada. After making their way by sea to Halifax, they travelled to Edmonton, where they waited for their wives & children to join them.
Leo made a stable life for his family in Edmonton until he decided to follow his sister Erna Panzenboeck to Victoria BC, a sensible life choice. He worked in construction for Louie Mayr until taking a position at Ste. Michelle Winery. In 1977, the winery moved to a new plant in Surrey BC, where Leo with his wife, drove their camper van to work a few months there. This lifestyle did not appeal to Leo & Fran, so they returned to Victoria. His son, Kurt, found Leo a job working for DND in Esquimalt. Leo retired from that position in 1992, enjoyed retirement by playing golf with his wife & friends almost daily at the Metchosin Golf & Country Club and spent many vacations in Austria.
As they aged, life slowed down & health issues arose which kept them housebound until his beloved wife passed away in 2019.
Leo resided in hospital for several months until he was admitted to the Summit at Quadra Village in Victoria & spent his remaining time being cared for by the wonderful staff.
We the surviving family thank the doctors, nurses & care staff for all their care and compassion towards Leo.
There will be no service by request. Please consider donating to The Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en
