Lan passed away at home where she wanted to be in Saanich, British Columbia, on Apr 6, 2020, after an unfair struggle against cancer.

Survived by spouse Brian Haug, father Lawrence, mother Betty, grandmother May, grandmother Yeh, brother David (Carolina), niece Rafaella, and nephew Leonardo.

Lan was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on Nov 8, 1979, and immigrated with her family to Canada as a young girl. She attended school in Toronto then Vancouver, obtaining her bachelor’s degree from UBC. She met her sweetheart Brian in 1999 and moved to Victoria where they made their home together and Lan found her career as a financial planner with RBC.

Lan was pretty, charming, and sweet, a lovely soul who saw the best in everything and everyone. She thought of others before herself. Her bright, ready smile and easy laugh brought light to any gathering. Her memory will forever be held close to all our hearts.

Deepest thanks to many friends and loved ones for their gifts, food, messages, and visits, and to the amazing, kind caregivers of Victoria Hospice and Saanich Community Health. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lan’s honour may be made to the BC SPCA (where she found faithful Lola) or to Victoria Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, Victoria BC. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the service will be limited to immediate family and invited guests only. All others are invited to attend virtually via Zoom by clicking on the link below.  Please use your video camera when joining so that family in attendance can see you and feel your support.

Dear Lan’s family, I am sorry to learn of Lan’s passing. She was my childhood friend and she was in my elementary class in Richmond. I know she was well liked by everyone, and known for being so friendly and kind. I remember her long beautiful hair, which was cut short one day, and we tried to console her because we knew she missed her long hair. By the end of the day, she was back to her sweet, smiling self. Everyone just loved her. I recall that her older brother gave his Nintendo and games to my younger brother, who got a lot of enjoyment from it. All good memories of a simpler time. Unfortunately I lost contact with Lan after she moved away to Burnaby. I always meant to reconnect with her later when we were older but I regret I never did… I am so sorry. Sincere condolences for your loss.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Lan’s passing. My thoughts and wishes are with Brian, Lola and Lan’s family. I knew Lan through her spouse Brian, and it was obvious Lan was a bright, funny, gentle, loving soul who made everyone else feel better simply by being in the room. I am so sorry and I agree, this is not fair at all.

  • Giselle Wikelund

Brian and Lan’s father and mother, Lan was a lovely, friendly, helpful woman. I recall her assisting my elderly mother even though it was not her job, (can’t remember the details, but she was always so very pleasant). It was a pleasure every time I saw her, often in the parking lot at the Esquimalt Plaza. A few weeks ago, as I drove by, I thought “I wonder how Lan is doing?”. I was shocked to see her obituary in an older newspaper. She has been in my mind so much since then. She was far too young to have to go through this. I am so sorry. Giselle Wikelund

    Dear Family of beloved Lan,

I was deeply saddened to hear of Lan’s passing. Although she was my financial planner for many years she was much more than that. Always with a ready smile and laughter we shared about our lives and she never forgot my son’s name and to ask after him. She saw me through some very tough times, was always empathetic and encouraging, helping me to short out my financial life as a single parent.
What a beautiful person – I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to thank her and say farewell – until we meet again.
She is terribly missed and I feel your loss.
    Kindest regards, Wendy

Dear Brian and Family, my deepest condolences to you on Lan’s passing. I met Lan at UBC in 1998; in Arts 200, she randomly began chatting with me (and several carpool peers) from a neighbouring bench one day, and a friendship was instantly formed. Through Lan, I embarked on many adventures that were previously unthinkable for a sheltered youth from the North Shore – car trips to Seattle in her red Volkswagen Beetle, parties, clubbing downtown (especially at Luv-a-Fair), and more – she helped to open up the world for me, and introduced a small group of us to her diverse network of friends, many of whom I still keep in touch with. I have many fond memories of Lan spanning more than 20 years, and her enthusiastic, easygoing manner and positive energy will be missed. I will never forget her smile.

  • Roseanne Horn

To Lan’s family & friends I wish to express my deepest, most heartfelt condolences. I did not have the privilege of knowing Lan on a personal basis; I’m not a close friend, I’m not a relative, I’m not a colleague and yet I too find myself feeling the loss of a very special person. I am ‘just’ a client of her’s through RBC – Colwood Br. Our encounters were infrequent, meeting up a few times a year over the past five years but because she was ‘Lan’ she always made me feel I was more than ‘just a client’…that I was someone important to her, that I mattered to her and what was important to ME in my life mattered to her. That was Lan… that was her beauty as a person…that was her gift that she gave to each person she knew no matter what the connection – THE LAN effect–we’ve all been blessed

  • Lizzy Peckham

    To the family of Lan,
Well I was one of her clients for almost 5 years at Colwood.
We could never get through meetings without Lan’s absolute love and passion learning new things. I told her I taught
yoga and she said she wanted to try it. Our next meeting
sure enough had started to practice.
Her smile, passion for life, enthusiasm and caring compassionate
    personality made her a star.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss …sending love and prayers to your family during this time of grief.

I met Lan in high school, and she became one of my best friends in university. Back then, she was my go-to buddy for clubbing and music festivals, and I managed to drag her along for some damp hikes. I have fond memories of this time. I remember Lan being as easy going as they come, and that she made friends easily. Indeed, she brought people together. So I’m very saddened to hear this news. My heart goes out to Lan’s family and friends.

  • Brandi

Condolences, Brian and family, on Lan’s passing. I met Lan in 2009 on vacation in Las Vegas, and her positivity and cheerfulness were the first things I noticed about her. We kept up in more recent years, making the Victoria Goodlife Half Marathon and 8km races an annual event each Thanksgiving. This past year, Lan was not well enough to participate in the race, but she still came out to the finish line to cheer us on. Even as she struggled through her illness, she always inquired about how we were doing and wished us a great day. Lan was one of the most selfless people I have ever met and I will miss her. Rest easy Lan ❤

  • Pat Emile

My sincerest condolences to Lan’s family and friends. I first met Lan many years ago, when we both worked together at RBC. I was impressed with Lan’s bubbly personality, she was always smiling and helpful. Throughout the years, even after I retired, whenever I would run into Lan, she always had a cheerful smile & hug, and I will always remember her for that. May you rest in peace, Lan.

I look at this and still cannot believe my eyes. We knew Lan for almost 20 years as a friend and colleague and I can’t imagine this world without her. Brian and family, I don’t have to tell you how much Lan will be missed and what she meant to so many people. I was so lucky to be witness to her wonderful laughter and kind soul on a daily basis and am so grateful for that. Lan babysat my daughter’s and they still remember that night and talk about it to this day. We are a family of four heartbroken souls who will forever miss Lan and never, ever forget her. She truly was a light in this world that will forever shine in our hearts and in our memories… We love you Lan.
