Together Again

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Julian Cecil (Cec) Berezowski on November 21,2020. Cec passed away peacefully with his daughter Laurie by his side at Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead. Born in 1929, in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Cec was the eldest of 3 brothers. Upon graduation from high school, Cec was employed as a reporter for the Kamsack times. During his tenure there, he honed his writing and reporting skills which served him well throughout his life both in his military career, and subsequently in his career as a consultant.

During his posting at Work Point Barracks, he met and married his wife Eleanor Vanlea Cave in 1955. While proudly serving the Canadian Armed Forces the world over Cec attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After retirement Cec and Van returned to Victoria, the city which they both loved so much.

During his retirement years Cec was active in RUSI, serving for a time as the editor of their newsletter. He enjoyed gardening around his home, golfing and curling at Glen Meadows country club. Cec is predeceased by his parents Mary and Joseph Berezowski, his wife Eleanor Vanlea (2012) and his brother Melvin Berezowski (2015).

He is survived by his daughter Laurie Gallucci (Michael), his grandson Brian Gallucci (Nicole), his granddaughter Katherine Ubil, his great grandson Emrys Ubil, his brother Edward Berezowski (Mary), nieces, nephews and cousins. At Cec’s request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association  https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en/take-action/donate  would be appreciated.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I have fond memories of Cec in Shilo in the 1960s and in Victoria since the 1990s. He was an outstanding artillery officer, an enthusiastic historian and a true gentleman. Today, while perusing an April 1947 copy of the “Saskatchewan Area Cadet Bulletin” I was delighted to come across this entry:
#2053 Kamsack High School Cadet Corps
    Cadet Berezowski, C
Promoted to Acting Cadet Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 December 1946

Cec worked tirelessly with me trying to save the Officers Mess and Quarters at Work Point Barracks under great odds. To his credit he created a chronology of people and events in the development of BC’s Coastal Defences and Work Point Barracks (Military District #11) and through to post 2nd WW. These can be found in the Municipal Archives of Esquimalt. I found him to be a great orator as he witnessed events in East/West Germany that were at the pinacol of a potential 3rd WW. I have many a paper he wrote on military historical events in BC and Canada. I miss the old boy and his sincerity. Laurie, please contact me if you could.

From a fellow curler at Glen Meadows- farewell, and blessings on your family at this special time.

  • Justin bones

An extraordinary man, and a shining example to us of the men and women who gave so much of their life protecting the freedom we have. I will miss his amazing stories, his clever jokes and the true interest and care he always gave to us as his neighbours for over 40 years. Rest In Peace! You will live on in my thoughts and memories.

Sincere condolences to all the family members.
Cec and I belonged to the 53 HAA Regt in Yorkton and Kamsack. We travelled together, by train, pre 1950 to Victoria to do our annual practice at Work Point Barracks. We received our regular force commissions in 1951.
We enjoyed golf at Glen Meadows, on occasion, a great fellow…sadly missed in our lives.
Be well, thru these difficult virus months.

‘Cec’ was a great friend and golf partner to “Bomber Bateman”, Chris Seymour, and myself back in the Glen Meadows days. He was also a most valued and honest strategic analyst and writer for DANNPAC (the Pacific Region division of the Defence Association National Network). He richly deserves to be remembered with respect, admiration and fondness…..”Fair Winds and Following Seas” to you my friend!

To Laurie and the Berezowski family: my deepest condolences over the loss of your father ‘Cec’. But being reunited with ‘Van’ will be his greatest Christmas gift!
