It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Dad and Papa, Juan Antonio Úbeda. Tony passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife and daughter on the evening of November 6th, 2020 in Victoria, B.C. He was 78 years old.

Tony was born in Madrid, Spain on March 27th, 1942 and is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Catherine Úbeda (Cathy) and his daughter Pamela Úbeda. He is adoringly remembered by his two young grandchildren Noah and Olive, his son-in-law Johan Bosman and his family in Spain.

Always up for an adventure, Tony emigrated from Spain to Toronto, Canada in 1966. In 1970 he met his future wife Cathy, who had just immigrated from Scotland, “up the dancing” at the 21 Club. It was love at first sight and they were married 9 months later. Shortly after, Tony decided it was time for another adventure and took a job at Mullins Marine as a motorcycle mechanic in Victoria BC and moved himself and his new wife out West. It was there they built their first house and had their daughter, Pamela.

Shortly after Pamela was born, adventure called again and they moved down to Simi Valley, California to enjoy the sun. In 1980 they decided it was time to go back to Victoria. They built a couple more houses over the years but their home in Gordon Head is where they finally found home and where they settled for the last 30 years. They also loved to travel together and over the years took several trips back to their beloved homelands of Spain and Scotland.

Tony was a kind, sensitive and quiet man with a great sense of humour. He will be remembered with that classic cheeky grin on his face. He was happiest when using his hands, building things, tinkering with his cars and feeding his dogs treats. He adored his little family; spending time with his grandkids, adventuring with his wife, enjoying the food and wine of his homeland and of course, watching his favourite football team Real Madrid beat FC Barcelona.

A private service to honour his life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Saturday, November 14th, 2020 at 2:00 pm. In order to attend please RVSP McCall Gardens as seating is limited. All others are invited to attend virtually via Zoom.

Dear Cathy I am so sorry to hear about Tony’s passing. What a great man and husband. Your love is a shining example to us all. I have great memories of the love that you both have for each other. He is a special man, husband Grandpapa and friend. Our lives are better to have known a great man. Tony will always grow in our hearts.

We were truly shocked and very saddened to hear of Tony’s passing. Although we have not been in touch the last several years, our memories and thoughts of him and his family are always close at heart. We reminisce of one of the first times we met in the 70’s when we were altogether (when Tony & I lived in Chilliwack) and we went to the PNE in Vancouver with Ursula & Salvador, and Maurice (my brother). We had a great and fun time with photos taken in pretend jail (which we still haven stored here after 46 years ago).
Those we love do not go away They walk beside us everyday
Unseen, unheard but always near Still loved, still missed and very dear
He will live forever,in all of us Truly missed but never forgotten

Our hearts and prayers are with you Cathy, Pamela & Johan & Noah & Olive We will follow the service on the Zoom today at 2:00 so that we can be together to celebrate Tony.

There are people who, even being thousands of thousands away, make themselves loved and become someone special in your life

My uncle is one of those people…

I have always had a special feeling for him and I have enjoyed every minute that I have spent by his side. All the memories that come to mind with him, cause me a feeling of calm. I liked asking him all kinds of things about Canada and his life there. I was fascinated to imagine the moment of his trip for the first time and many times, I imagined myself, doing that same journey.
In each one of his visits here, we practically disputed time with him. We all wanted to do our best so that he would never tire of coming to see us. But time was what it was and for me, I was never by his side long enough. I always wanted more.

I’m looking forward to teaching you thousands of things that you would have liked. I just hope I have lived up to the time we enjoyed together.

    I love you, uncle

I am so sorry for all the pain that Cathy, Pam, Johan, Noah and Olive must be going through now and you just have to know that, although thousands of miles away, I am here for what you need. My feelings and those of Mari, Mikel and Maika, are with you right now.

    We love you

Sorry we can’t be there in person our thoughts will be with you all. We are also feeling the grief. Tony put up a good fight, he knew he had a loving family by his side. He will be sadly missed by all. But you still have happy memories with photos and thoughts. He sure did a lot in his life. He did have a lovely smile, and those lovely Blue Spanish Eyes. Our thoughts are with you all. Love Irene, Danny, David & Kyla. xxxxx
