With sadness, we announce the death of Joyce Butler on April 6, 2023 at her home in North Saanich. She was born on May 7, 1929 in Vernon, B.C., but spent most of her life on the Peninsula. Her life was full of enterprise and achievement, in her academic studies, as a board member for St. Margaret’s School and the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and in her business affairs. She shared a deep interest in books, music, dogs, gardening, and the natural world with her husband, Thomas Butler, who predeceased her in 2006. She is survived by her two daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth; two grandchildren, Tim and Freya; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Kate.

The family is very grateful to her loyal friend Barbara Walker, and to her caregivers, especially Anna and Joy.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please plant a tree or donate to a nature conservation charity in her memory.

My sincere condolences to The Butler Family. I was Joyce’s “go to plumber” for decades and considered her family. We always had nice visits, enjoying an ice cold Ginger Ale from her fridge, while sitting in the sun room basking in the sun while watching nature. I truly miss Joyce and her wonderful smile, cute jokes, and endearing personality.
Happy heavenly birthday Joyce. We all miss you dearly.

Catherine and Elizabeth. I am sad to hear that your mother has passed and sorry for your loss. I am sure you have many memories to keep you company and comfort you at this time and always.
When I was young I admired your mother for her style and fashion sense, and for her quiet demeanor and dignity. She was always good to me, and I still wear the jade earrings she gave me.
I last communicated with her when your father, my Uncle Tom, passed. She invited me to visit, and I regret that time never came.
I hope you are both happy in your life choices, and enjoy good health. Take care.

    Elizabeth, Catherine and families:
My heartfelt condolences to each of you with the passing of your mother Joyce. I recall lovely memories of your mom from our childhood years. Your mother was a role model for me as I remember her science work at UVic. Visits to your Keating and Midland Road , and to the North Saanich homes allowed me to see your mom’s on going love for her many dogs. My own mother and I always enjoyed talking with Joyce. May each of you hold your own treasured memories of Joyce close to your hearts.
