John was born in Stocksfield, Northumberland, England on July 27, 1927 and passed away peacefully on November 17, 2020 in Victoria, BC. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Anez as well as his son, Simon and daughter, Sarah.

Alan W. McFarlane John Heslop’s passing reminds me of his contribution, as Victoria Rep, to the, then, British Pensioners Association (Canada) one of the predecessor groups fighting for indexing/uprating of the British State Pension. Those groups from Victoria , Vancouver, Calgary & Toronto have now amalgamated as The Canadian Alliance of British Pensioners http://www.britishpensions.com . As a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England &Wales and latterly in Canada, a Chartered Life Underwriter, John well understood the long-term aspect of making Voluntary National Insurance Contributions and encouraged many to do so, including his own son and daughter.

I remember John so well when he came to Men’s group at Beacon Hill Villa, where John lived his last years. I leaded the group and I always loved listen to his stories about his younger years in England.I will keep an eye on your wife Inez.

Ann Fox I suspect this is the John Heslop I met in 1998. I had just moved to the city and volunteered at Oak Bay Lodge and was assigned to bingo night about which I was woefully ignorant of anything beyond straight lines. John Heslop was organizing the night and took me under his wing. He was a kind and pleasant man who made the evening a treat for all the residents. What truly impressed me was here was a man who had a significant day. job but didn’t feel giving a room full of seniors a fine night of bingo was beneath him. And he even told me about collecting a British pension. I wasn’t there long but I’ve never forgotten him.

Christine Seaville I noticed John’s obituary in the paper and wanted to let the family know how grateful I am for John’s help. You won’t know me but with some great suggestions and a lot of advice, John navigated me through the British Pension System so I could apply and get the most amount possible. This was quite a few years ago when we were fighting to “unfreeze” the pensions for those living in Canada and he willingly gave his time and expertise to me, and I believe I still have his business card.
I will be forever grateful the longer I live as now I receive much more than I would have on my own! He did not ask for payment. I just wanted to let you know about this.And being married for 69 years I note is a wonderful achievement.

So sorry to read of your father’s passing in today’s Times Colonist. Always enjoyed his company at Pavilion Society lunches and the chats we had whenever we met grocery shopping. As you may not have known, we had some overlap in our careers: we both worked – though at different times – in the Finance Division of British Oxygen in Hammersmith House, London.
