It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our Mother, Joan Ann Scharf (nee McGillivray) on March 5, 2021. Mom was born in Ottawa on May 8, 1935, where she grew up, started her family, and her career with the Federal Government. In 1967 with her mother, Gladys McGillivray (predeceased), she relocated her family to Victoria. Mom continued her career with the Federal Government in various positions with the Canadian Coast Guard until her retirement in 1990.
No matter what the circumstances in life, Mom always found something positive in every situation. Her love of family, generous nature, kindness and great sense of humor are among the many things she shared with all who knew and loved her. Predeceased by her husband, partner and true love, Hugh MacDonald, her step son Eric, and sister-in-law Lucille. Survived by her brother, Robert McGillivray, her children: Diane (David), Cathy (Michael), Richard (Adele), and Michael (Adelia), step children: Ian (Valerie), Doug, Heather (Paul), Robb (Sue), Eric’s wife Linda, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be arranged in Victoria at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so can make a donation in memory of Mom to the charity of their choice.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.
