Jean was born on November 12th in Cardiff, Wales, the only daughter of Stanley Kirk and Beatrice Butcher and died peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, just after noon on February 15th.

She and her husband of 62 years, Brian, grew up together and leave a loving daughter Susan and partner Karen and loving son Stephen, his wife Ivanka, and grandchildren Dana and Julia.  All celebrated the 60 years of the marriage of Jean and Brian in Victoria.

Jean graduated from Cathays High School, Cardiff and Cleeve’s College and, until the births of Susan and Stephen, worked as a Secretary.  Her loves were reading, tennis, walking, hiking the mountains of Wales, the English Lake District and Western Canada.  Later in life, Jean and Brian explored the coastal waters of BC under sail and chartered sail-boats world-wide.

Jean was a partner to Brian in many ways, first typing his MD Thesis in an era when a correction meant retyping the entire page and then working as Secretary and copy-editor to the Canadian Radiology Journal when Brian was Editor for nearly a decade.

Later, although not a great lover of travel Jean stood beside Brian as he travelled widely as an ambassador of North American radiology in the role of President of the Radiological Society of North America.

But ultimately Jean was devoted to nurturing friends and family.  She had many long-standing friendships, some dating back to infancy.

Jean had suffered several illnesses beginning in 2018 and she struggled with these valiantly, but ultimately passed away peacefully with her family beside her.

A private Memorial Service will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, Victoria, BC.   In lieu of flowers, donations please to the UBC Department of Radiology Teaching Fellowship Fund. https://radiology.med.ubc.ca/giving/
