Jean died peacefully in Victoria, BC, the morning of February 18, 2023 at age 104. She was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 6, 1919 to parents George and Minnie Whitney of Langdon, Alberta. In 1937 she married William James Wilson (Bill) Cathro. They had two sons, William James Whitney Cathro and Gordon Murray Cathro.
Ever an optimist, Jean was a member of the Optimists wherever she lived, and by example, reminded all to live positively day by day. She was an active volunteer at many organizations including Oak Bay United Church, the Western Institute for the Deaf, Fairfield Activity Centre and Canadian Girls In Training (CGIT). She was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee medal for significant contributions to the community and was a frequent winner of the prestigious CFAX Citation Rose for her contributions to Victoria Hospice.
Jean was predeceased by her husband Bill, siblings Catherine, Norman and Roy, and son, Gordon. She is survived by her brother, Stuart and his wife Emily, son Jim and his wife Diane, three grandchildren, Christine, Julie and Warren, and three great grandchildren.
Jean’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the people at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital for the quality of care that Jean received during her four years at “The Mountain”.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, April 16th, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Parkinson’s Wellness Project, or to a charity of your choice.
