Dad passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023; almost 10 months since his wife, Gladys passed away, and just 2 weeks shy of what would have been his 94rd Birthday.
Dad had a great smile when family, toddlers, and pets came to visit. Even the staff at his care home, Selkirk Village, commented how pleasant Dad was and of his beautiful smile.
During his last day and moments, I was fortunate to be with him at his bedside. He was joined by his grandsons for a time, and his daughter-in-law came to say her goodbyes. I am grateful for my sons, bringing me coffee and breakfast, and a charger for my phone.
Dad was able to enjoy some of his favourite tunes, thanks to the magic of YouTube. Songs like “Love’s old Sweet Song”, “Waltzing Matilda”, and a few medleys from the Simon Fraser University Pipeband. Most significant was ‘The Old Man’ by John McDermott – a touching song for what turned out to be his last moments.
I promised my Mum, as she passed away, that I would take good care of Dad until he joined her again. I did everything I could.
Dear Mum,
Dad is now on his way to join you. I’m happy knowing you both will be in each other’s company once again, and able to look out for each other. Don’t worry about me – I’ll continue to find my way and watch out for Quintin and Spencer; I know you are proud of them, as we all are. Thanks for everything you have done for all of us. It will be quite a while until we meet again, so just turn the light off when Dad arrives and don’t stay up waiting for me. I’ll look for you when I get there; and will bring you stories of your grandsons, of adventures, happiness, and love.
Until we meet again,
Jim.
A Gathering for both James and Gladys will be planned for Spring 2024.

My condolences to you, Jim and your family. Mr. Nicoll was my grade 6 teacher at Burnside Elementary. He challenged us, expected our best, taught us to stand at attention and at ease and had creative art projects. With his guidance we lead a memorable Remembrance Day ceremony. I met him again at Hampton Elementary when I was substitute teaching. Just wanted to share my memories. May your memories bring you comfort.
