Jim passed away peacefully on August 7, 2021, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital with his wife Betty at his side.  His long journey with Parkinson’s and heart disease is over and he is at peace.

Grieving his loss are his loving wife, Betty; brother, Gerry (Jenette); uncle, Wes Umphrey (Darlene); sister-in-law, Barbara Bloor (Grant); niece Sara (Brett Rumley) and their son Weston; niece, Melissa (Greg MacDougall) and their daughter Kayla; niece, Alanna (Andrew LaFrance); niece, Cheryl Bloor (Scott Lugrin) and their children Franklin, Eric, Alex and Evelyn; niece, Stacey Bloor (Nathan Wall) and their children Kaylem and Carter; and many cousins.

Jim was born and raised in Victoria and attended Craigflower Elementary School and Esquimalt High School.  He followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps and became an electrician and proud member of IBEW Local 230.  He worked at various jobs in BC, Toronto, and lastly at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Jim enjoyed golfing and was a member at Gorge Vale Golf Club for over 40 years.  He also loved travelling the world with Betty, which included many cruises and trips to Hawaii.

Our sincere thank you to Dr. Jollymore and Dr. Yvorchuck who provided Jim with exemplary medical care over the years.  Heartfelt thanks also to the staff on 4S RJH for the excellent care given to Jim.  They were exceptionally caring and compassionate to Jim and very supportive to Betty during Jim’s time in the hospital.

A Celebration of Jim’s life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC, on Sunday, August 15 at 1:00 PM.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendees must RSVP by clicking the following link….

Betty, Gerry and family. Darlene and I want to let you know that Jimmie’s Celebration of Life was very nice; just the way he would have wanted it. We will all miss Jimmie as he was a very special part of our life. He loved the family and now it is up to us to keep the family ties strong. Be strong and love each other.

Growing up at Shawnigan, summers in the 70’s were always so much fun with Jim and his sense of humour, fast boats, cars etc. The MUD compound was the best. He always had time for a pesky neighbour kid who thought Jim was cool. Condolences to you and your family Gerry. Best, Michael Ward

    To Betty, Gerry and Family,

I am so sorry to read of Jim’s recent passing. I will cherish all of the great memories I have of the fun times that I, my sister Wende, and our parents, Les and Rose Vivian, shared together with the Umphrey family, up at Shawnigan Lake, along with the Dempster and Munroe families. I remember the sign that was at the entrance to the property that they all shared, that read “M U D”…Munroes, Umphreys, Dempsters….it always made me smile.

I will always remember Jim as such a kind, soft spoken man, with a warm smile, and caring heart. Please know my thoughts are with you all at this very sad and difficult time.

    Dear Betty
Thinking of you and Jim’s family at this time. Jim was a good man. He liked to tease me that I was older than him (although only by one day).
May all the good times and memories you shared together give you strength at this time.
    May he rest in peace.

    Myrna and Dave

Jim was a great guy. I knew him through his many years of work at the hospital. He had a great wit, good with a joke and always had that friendly smile. We shared a few bevies on our golf trips together and it was always a fun upbeat time. It saddens me to learn he passed on so young.

  • Bob Wallace
