Jim O’Brien was born in Liverpool, England on October 15, 1946. He passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on November 1, 2023.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Louise; sister Colette (Paul Quinlan); nephews Christopher and Andrew Quinlan and niece Kate Hardeley (all residing in England).  He is also survived by close cousin Frank Latham (Marion) of Australia and his enduring friend, Roy Clements of Vancouver.

Jim was a longtime golfer and member at Uplands Golf Club.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and sharing lots of hearty laughs with good friends.  Jim was a dedicated fan of the Liverpool Football Club (LFC) and, of course, a forever fan of The Beatles.

Jim left England at a very young age. He was proud to have travelled and worked throughout many countries, settling in Canada in the early 1970s where he lived for the remainder of his life.  Jim was a master tradesman and successful entrepreneur in a variety of business ventures.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Uplands Golf Club, 3300 Cadboro Bay Road, Victoria, on Sunday, November 26, 2023, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

    Louise,
So sorry for your loss. Our sincerest condolences to you and your family. Jim was quite the character and never short of humor and will be missed by all his buddies. Take care.

Louise – I am very sorry for your loss. Jim was a confident and accomplished man and the two of you made a wonderful team. A self-starter and largely self-educated, he was the very opposite of a shrinking violet and made his opinion known on all sorts of topics. We always enjoyed his company and already feel the loss of his presence at the golf club. What a nice footnote to a life well lived that he was able to shoot his age on the course just a few weeks ago. We’ll miss him.

    Sorry for your loss Louise
I have great memories of the time I stayed with Jimmy and yourself before I travelled across Canada. Jimmy was larger than life, cooked a mean moose steak and was always keen to take me to all the local pubs while scouting out his next venture. His advice to me if I ever owned a pub was to never give away a free drink.

Uncle Jimmy had the best stories and was never short on advice or a life lesson – like teaching us what a ‘slummy jar’ was as kids or schooling us on the correct way to enjoy a whiskey (no coke!). Sending my love to you Louise, Collette, Chris, Andrew and Kate xx

  • Frank and Marian Latham

Sending all our love to you Louise. No words can express the sadness we are all feeling but hopefully remembering all the good times and savouring the great memories made together will help you through the difficult ones. Jim was a larger than life character and will be fondly remembered for many years to come. He was the brother that Frank never had and will be sorely missed.
