Dr. James (Jim) Hurley, who practiced his entire professional career in Victoria, passed away January 9th after a lengthy illness.

Born to Maurice George Hurley and Ida (Singbeil) on January 16, 1946 in Yellowgrass, Sask, Dr. Hurley received his formal schooling in Edmonton and his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Alberta in 1971. Jim carried out his postgraduate General Surgery training at the University of Calgary, The Foothills Hospital and in England. In 1976, Jim began his surgical career as a junior associate in the Surgical Consultants Group in Victoria.

In 1980, Jim married Faye Smulders beginning a long and loving family life. He loved sports and played hockey, skied, bicycled and was passionate about golf and woodworking. He also enjoyed travel and was a talented artist. With the onset of his illness, Jim retired after 22 years of faithfully serving his community. At that time, he was a leading member of his specialty group. After leaving his practice, he devoted his time to his family, friends and avocations.

In addition to his loving wife Faye, Jim leaves behind his three children, Nicolaas, Shannon and Brian; sisters Maureen (Leighton) Fisk and Cheryl (Robert) Ferguson; brother George, mother-in-law Eileen Smulders, Faye’s brothers and sisters, numerous nieces and nephews of the Hurley and Smulders extended families and a wide circle of special and faithful friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude and sincere appreciation to all of the wonderful staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital (Watson 2, Memorial Pavillion) for their skill and devoted care for Jim.

Donations in lieu of flowers in honour of Dr. Hurley may be made to the Victoria Epilepsy & Parkinsons Centre. (250-475-6677)
