Hilary passed away peacefully in the early morning of 5th June 2006. Her family was with her throughout her short stay in Royal Jubilee Hospital. She suffered from an illness which she bore with much courage and determination for 24 years, serving as an inspiration and model for her family for the rest of their lives.
Hilary leaves behind her ever-loving husband Neville (54 years), daughter Geraldine, son Jonathan and her beloved granddaughters Jessica (John), Jillian (Adam) and Julia (Ryan). Her devotion to and love for them played a large part in her life. Their loving memories of her will not diminish over time. She also leaves behind her brother David Barnes (Jean) and recently predeceased by her sister Jo.
Hilary was born to John Stanley and Elsie Barnes in 1927, a farming family in England. Her young life on the farm in the 1930’s produced a quiet unassuming person of high standards, wit and cheerfulness, bolstered by a strong belief “that next year will be better”.
In 1953 Neville and Hilary emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta; moving to Victoria in 1955 where she has spent more than 50 years in paradise with her family and friends. A devoted volunteer worker and as an active member of Juan de Fuca Hospitals’ Auxiliary Association Hilary served behind the counter of the Aberdeen Hospital gift shop. She served for the last time on the Thursday prior to her passing.
The family wish to thank Drs. D. Critchley, P. Houghton, T. Connolly and G. Ganz for their dedicated and caring attention, which enabled Hilary to keep going for many years. The family also wish to thank the Emergency Services and the nursing staff of Royal 3 (Respiratory Care Unit) for their compassionate care and continuous attention given Hilary over the two days she was with them.
A memorial service will be held at McCALL’S SEQUOIA GARDENS MEMORIAL, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Tuesday, June 13th at 1:00 pm. The interment will take place at Royal Oak Burial Park. In lieu of flowers donations in Hilary’s memory may be made to the B.C. Lung Association or other charities of one’s choice.
