Passed away in the early hours of Saturday, August 25th Predeceased by Lily, his beloved wife of 53 years. Survived by his son, Terence (wife Nancy); daughter, Deirdre MacPherson (husband Doug); grandchildren, Erin, Kimberley, Michael, Stephen and great granddaughter, Aislinn.
George was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and lived his early years in nearby Carrickfergus. As a young man he started his engineering education at Belfast Technical School and Queen’s University. In 1940 he married his childhood sweetheart, Lily. When war broke out George enlisted in the British Army and eventually served with the XIV Royal Engineers in Burma, attaining the rank of Captain. Upon his return to Northern Ireland, he completed his BSc in Engineering at Queen’s. The family emigrated to Canada in 1952, soon settling in Victoria. In 1954 George obtained employment with the BC Highways Department, eventually becoming Senior Bridge Design Engineer. He retired in 1981.
Beyond his professional life, George was a devoted caregiver to his wife and a long time member of St John’s Anglican Church. His other interests included painting, jogging, swimming, learning french, sailing his star yacht, and driving too fast in his ’64 MGB. He was also a voracious reader.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
