Born in a village near Guangzhou in the Guangdong province of China, Fung Ping was the oldest child of Sui Yan Chiang and Yat-Yeung Liu Chiang.
She is predeceased by her parents, daughter Lynda (Carlos) and son Peter (Deborah). Fung Ping is survived by husband Fuk Chi Wong, sons Joseph (Nancy) and Mark (Shirley), daughters Amanda (Larry Arnett), Amelia and Sally (Russell Chan), grandchildren Dorothy, Katherine, Anthony, Jordan, Loryn, Connor, Tanis, Madelyn (Mathew Levasseur), Zen, and Amy, brothers Jow Moe (Bon Yun), Naang Go (Yuet Ping) and Ssu Wong (May Fung), sisters Ping Sim (Kie Hung Jian), Dong Sil (Kim Saang Lam) and Mmm Mui (Gok Sing Jiang).
In search of a better life, Fung Ping and her family made the long walk into Hong Kong in 1957 and immigrated to Victoria, BC in 1963. Fung Ping was an extremely hard-working and dedicated individual who worked multiple jobs to support her family. Despite the hardships of raising a large, young family with little money and adapting to a new country and a new language, Fung Ping persevered and regularly sent money back to her family in China and was instrumental in sponsoring many of them to come to Canada.
After retiring at the age of 70, she enjoyed swimming, gardening and cooking tasty meals for her children and grandchildren. She developed friendly relationships with many of the regulars and staff at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre even though she could not speak English. Fung Ping will be remembered for her loving and caring disposition and her endless sacrifices for her family. She will be dearly missed by her surviving family and friends.
A Private Family Viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 starting at 6:00 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 27 at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting traditional “Bak Gum” for Fung Ping (collected by any of her surviving children) or a donation made in her name to the Victoria Chinatown Care Society (online at www.canadahelps.org).
