Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Halliwell (nee Henderson) passed away peacefully on December 3, 2006. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Dr. David Halliwell, her four children Margaret(Mike) Banner of Sooke; John of Victoria; Barbara (Andrew) Chen of Hong Kong, and Mary(Bernie) Halliwell-Cyr of Ottawa, her adored grandchildren Stephanie, Kevin and Matthew Banner, and Alex and Elie Chen, and by many nieces, nephews and friends across Canada.
Betty was the elder of two children born in Winnipeg to Scottish immigrants Bill and Helen Henderson. From a young age Betty wanted to be a nurse, and to raise the tuition she worked as a governess for five years. In 1944, she received her RN from the Winnipeg General Hospital, and remained an active member of the alumnae. In 1948, Betty married Dave Halliwell and moved with him to Kenora, Ontario where Dave had a thriving general practice. They were happy and devoted to each other as they traveled through life together. A private man with a vivacious social wife, Dave was often dragged into life by Betty. Dave had always planned to study ophthalmology, so in 1966 the family moved to Winnipeg where he attended the University of Manitoba. After completing his studies in 1969, he and Betty relocated to Victoria, BC to open his new practice.
Family, friends, the church, bridge, volunteering, gardening and golf were all important parts of Betty’s life. Dave and Betty loved to travel to places around the world to visit family and friends. Known affectionately as “lead-foot Betty” by her children, she drove the family across the North American continent and places in between. Betty and Dave were lifelong Christians, and were actively involved with their church in the communities in which they lived. Betty’s vivacious and kind manner, and her humour and positive approach to life enabled her to form many lasting friendships. Her unconditional love and support of family and friends is her great legacy. Betty read the Bible every day and often said “When I die do not grieve for me for I am going Home.” Please join the family for a celebration of a life well lived.
Betty will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver, Victoria BC, on Sunday, December 10, 2006 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
