Elaine Hong, age 57, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20th 2024. Predeceased by mother Sau Ping, father Wing Foo Kung and mother-in-law (Jean) Kwai Ying Hong. She is survived by husband Henry, daughter Kelsey, son Daryl, sisters Jean (Jamie), Sue (Tim), Carling (Aaron), nieces/nephews Marlyse, Trevor, Alex, Tamera, Kyle & Sophia. Uncle Tin Kuen (Susan) of New York, cousins K.Y. (Lisa), Fred (Louisa), & Frank (Carolyn). Half sister-in-law York Quin Hong, Stella (John), Norma (James), nieces Jennifer (Andrew), Selena (Peter), Miranda (Mike), Alexa (Juan) Carissa and many other loving relatives.

Born and raised in Victoria, Elaine lived and enjoyed life as best as she could despite her progressive Muscular Dystrophy diagnosis. Never wanting to be the center of attention, she was content being in the background. Elaine really enjoyed time spent with family, friends, and the many co-workers, colleagues, and acquaintances she met who became her personal friends while working 28 years for the BC Ministry of Finance, Revenue Division.

She wanted to continue working full-time but her deteriorating health condition over the years made it impossible. So, she reluctantly went on Long Term Disability spending the majority of her time at home. During her active years, she enjoyed cooking, baking, eating out, planning and hosting lunches, dinners, parties, etc., traveling on many family road trips and cruises, having movie nights out then later family movie nights at home, completing Sudoku puzzles, online iPad memory games, coffee and munching chips!

Elaine had an admirable quality of remembering and recognizing family/friend’s milestones. She was able to partake in many celebrations over the decades and really enjoyed all of the events. She had a very kind heart, ensuring everyone was doing well, and having a good time.

The Hong household has always been ‘Party Central’ over the years with many family and friends visiting all the time. Even more so when Elaine was not able to leave the house as easily. During her last year when daily care-aides came 4 times a day, the regular health care staff became her new temporary best friends. They loved talking to her and vice-versa about their personal lives and they did their best to make Elaine’s life at home more enjoyable.

Elaine was a truly wonderful person and we will all miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Elaine can be made to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, 500- 40 Eglinton Avenue, East Toronto, Ontario, M4P 3A2, Attn: Jennifer Williams, Online- www.muscle.ca/donate or via telephone (1-800-567-2873).

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service was held on Monday, September 9th, 2024, at 2:00 PM, in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, British Columbia.

Absolutely beautifully and lovingly written about a fantastic person. Elaine truly did have a kind heart; she made me welcome when I joined Revenue Division at the Ministry of Finance 8 years ago or so, and we had many a laugh. She was the heart of our branch before she went on long-term disability. She was always so thoughtful and caring and will be greatly missed. She was so proud of her family, so proud of her kids. It was clear to me that she was a great and doting mom. I am so sorry for your loss.

I was sooo sorry to hear of Elaine’s passing & so glad I was able to visit her recently though I did not know it would be the last time I would be in her company. Comments made in her tribute definitely on the mark, I met Elaine in the workplace & was one of the fortunate ones to call Elaine my friend for approx 30+ years and enjoyed many outings together after work hours.
