Barry Nagle was born on November 1, 1935, in Kimberly, British Columbia. He grew up surrounded by nature and the Rocky Mountains. He explored the wilderness with his father who taught him all about hunting, fishing, and living in the great outdoors.

Barry moved to Golden B.C. and became an educator. He inspired generations of young minds and pushed them to strive for their very best. Many of his past students mentioned the significant impact Barry had on their lives and how they are deeply saddened by his passing. He later moved to Victoria B.C. where he spent the remainder of his days golfing, fishing, enjoying art shows, and spending time with his family.

Barry passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones.

He will be dearly missed.

I’m sorry to hear of Mr. Nagle’s passing. My condolences. Although I was in the class of most of the other Nagle educators, I don’t think I ever had Barry as a teacher. I believe he had retired by the time I reached high school, but would come in as a sub sometimes. One day as I walked down the hall, I flipped someone the bird near his classroom as he was standing in the doorway watching it happen. Oops. He called me over and, totally ashamed, I immediately started to apologize. Mr. Nagle said, no, no, you’re not in trouble, let me show you something. He held up his outstretched hand and said, “why give them one of these (middle finger) when you can give them a whole bouquet”! I’m sure I’m not the only student he shared that with. He and I shared an enthusiastic “bouquet” and a huge grin in passing for many years. That obviously sat with me longer than any reprimand could have…a sure indicator of a great educator.

Barry Nagle was my favourite teacher in elementary school. He was an excellent educator through his ability to combine teaching ability with humour and patience for our grade 6 antics. He was also able to ‘get in on the joke’ and bestowed more than one nickname upon me during my time in his class, in addition to developing a unique ‘salute’ for me anytime he saw me, even years after graduation! He was very influential to a lot of students, including me, who benefited from his instruction and attention.

I am sad to hear of his passing – he will be missed

I had Mr Nagle as my grade 5 teacher at GES back in the day. Ill never forget him smashing a meter stick on someone’s desk to wake them up. He was a great teacher though. One of my favourites!

We are very sorry to hear of Barry’s passing. He was a colleague for many years in Golden and he was a good friend and ‘hockey buddy’ in Victoria. We had some wonderful times together sharing Lunches and coffee. We always looked forward to spending time with him. Often we shared experiences of our adventures and times in the Kootenays and in Yukon. He will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Dianne and the family.

When anyone ever asked who my favourite teacher was I always say Mr. Nagle. I remember him introducing us to opera by playing Aida at volume in the classroom. It was his first year at Golden Elementary and he was one ” cool” guy. I am sorry for your loss, he was a fine man. Alison Meredith nee Thornley

Sincere condolences to Barry’s family from the Chandler family…What a fine man!…We lived “across the alley” from Barry, Jeff, and their dear Mom and Dad “Ted & Winnie” in Chapman Camp..Barry & Jeff were older than me and my 3 siblings..I started grade 1 the first year we moved there in 1958…I recall us all being in awe of a huge bearskin hanging up in the Nagle’s yard one year…I remember Ted had spent years up north..and was a good hunter…& that our neighbour Jordy Zinovich even wrote a book about him…He obviously taught his sons well from what I read in Barry’s obit…As soon as I saw Barry’s picture in the paper today I thought of his Dad..as there is a striking resemblance..and that’s how I remember Ted from those many years ago. I am a retired R.N. in Victoria…I wish I’d known Barry lived here..It would have been nice to reminisce. His mother was a nurse…I remember that she influenced me in my career choice…Wonderful people! No doubt you will treasure fond memories of them all too.

So sad to hear of Barry’s passing. He was a wonderful mentor, colleague and friend. We shared some memorable times developing & teaching a Humanities 8 program in Golden Secondary School in the 1990’s. I really appreciated his sharing of his extensive experience in the classroom with a newby like me. After he retired there was always time for coffee & a good chinwag. After he and Dianne moved to Victoria, we kept in touch, but less and less as the years passed.

Our condolences to Dianne and Dave, Jeff and Louise.

I am so very sorry for your loss of such a wonderful man. I was in the class in Golden in his first year of teaching here. He was faced with a challenging 5/6 split and he handled it well. He was funny and kind and taught us well. I did some babysitting for him and his wife. I always felt he was a friend when meeting him on the street. He always had a smile and a laugh. Again, my deepest condolences.

  • Ronald Rowney

He was a great fella, he taught me in Grade 6 in Golden Elementary School.
When I have returned to Golden on many visits, I would occasionally bump into him at some point, and have short and wonderful little conversations. He will be missed.
    My condolences.
