Edith was born in Assam, India and immigrated to Canada in 1929 with her family (siblings Dick, Jack, Peter, Nancy, Muriel, Gwen, and Connie). She passed peacefully in her sleep in Victoria, at the age of 100 years. Married in 1945 to Geoffrey James Stewart, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years in 2010.
She is survived by her children Jim (Bev), Dianne (Wayne Butterfield), Roy (Jenny), and Reg (Sonia Santarossa); 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her older sister Nancy Linnell, and sister-in-law Helen Cooper.
Edie grew up in Victoria and completed her graduation at Victoria High School after which she enlisted and served with the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) until her marriage.
She was a devoted homemaker, aspiring to elevate the level of holistic good health of all family members. In many ways, she was ahead of her time with her passion for organic gardening and produce, homemade bread and baked goods. She was an avid composter, developed her own recycling and conservation methods and was actively involved in the successful campaign against the fluoridation of the City of Victoria’s tap water many decades ago.
She loved to take long walks, ride her bike, swim laps in the pool, and soak in the seaweed with her beloved sister, Gwennie when the families vacationed at Kye Bay Beach in the late 1950s and 60s. Geoff and Edie travelled to England, Scotland, Australia, Fiji, across Canada and the Northern United States and Alaska. Hawaii was a favorite destination for many years for family gatherings. In 1976, Edie and Geoff began wintering in Rancho Mirage, CA.
They were greatly compatible and thoroughly enjoyed their life, interests, and activities together, along with family members, in the sunshine. Now they are together again, forever. Lovingly missed and always remembered.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Edie’s caregivers, especially Diana, and to the nursing staff at Hospice.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Victoria Hospice in Edie’s name would be welcome.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Jim Hartshorne My sincere condolences to all the Stewart family on the passing of your Mother. It was an honour for me to get to know her over the years that I was involved in business with Mr Stewart Sr. and other family members. She always had a smile and kind word for me when we met and even at an advanced age she had a keen interest in life and astute comments on what was happening in her world.
I know she will be greatly missed.
