Passed peacefully in hospital at age 83 after a brief illness. Survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Valerie, son Darren (Teresa), daughter Tricia, brother Bruce (Georgina), and grandchildren Cleo, Athena, Rebecca, Aylin and Rowan. He has nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who will miss him as well.

Doug was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario to Harry and Cora Adderley. He joined the Navy in 1960 and served 4 years. While stationed in Victoria he fell in love with the city and his wife Val (not necessarily in that order), married in 1967, and stayed for the remainder of his life.

Doug worked 35 years for the BC Forest service and had a special affection for the BC Forest Museum, now the BC Forest Discovery Centre, for which he served on the Board of Directors, holding different positions over the years including Managing Director.

Doug, along with Val, was a long-time member of St. John the Divine Anglican Church and served as a verger, chalice bearer and volunteered his time for everything from sanding pews to working sound for services.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Doug’s honour.

A memorial service will be held at St. John the Divine, 1611 Quadra Street, Victoria, on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 1:00 pm. All are welcome.

My sincerest condolences to Val, Darren, Tricia and grandchildren. I first met Doug when he started to date Val, who was my best friend. He was such a fun person to be with and we always had a lot of laughs when we were together. I am so happy that I saw Doug and Val last September, when we made our trip to Victoria, as we now live in Toronto.
Doug, you will be greatly missed.
My prayers and thoughts are with your family.

I send my condolences to my cousin Doug’s remaining family and to Doig’s brother and my cousin , Bruce Adderley. It has been too many years since we were young cousins, who used to play together , as young children. We grew apart over the many years since then but I do remember you and Doug.

Dear Darren, Teresa, Val and family,

My sincerest condolences! Doug was my first cousin and although we lived in Manitoba and they in Thunder Bay, I remember our visits whenever Auntie Cora and Uncle Harry would come to Winnipeg. Both boys, Doug & Bruce, were closer in age to my siblings, Rory and Micki but being the baby of the family, I would pester them mercilessly to include me. My husband and I were fortunate enough to spend a lovely day at Val & Doug’s home on a visit to Victoria many years ago. We laughed about so many things that day. Those are the memories I will cherish and fondly remember of my cousin Doug. Rest in Peace, Doug. You will be missed by all who knew you.

Dear Darren, Teresa, Tricia and family.
Thinking of your family during this time of grief and loss.
I met your dad in the early 1960s, when your mom
& I joined the Anglican Young People’s Group, at
St. John the Divine Church in Victoria. In 1963, I left
Victoria to further my education & it was apparent to everyone that your Dad was totally smitten
    with your mom.
Doug was a true gentleman, and I know he will always be remembered for his smile & kindness toward others. He was one of a kind.

  • Lynda Hundleby

Condolences to Doug’s family, and especially friend Val.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. Peace be with you all.
