Doreen Sylvia Hackshaw (nee Bailey)(86yrs) passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital in Victoria BC, Canada the evening of Nov 18th 2022.

Survived by Husband Ornett (matrimony of 61yrs), twin sons Keith (Kathy), Kenneth (Janette), stepdaughter Francina DeRiggs, brother Isreal (Marilynn), and her six granddaughters Natasha (Daniel), Veronica (Jeffrey), Ashley, Jonelle, Angi, and Alyssa.

Doreen was born 28 July 1936 in Georgetown on the Caribbean Island of “St Vincent and the Grenadines”. Having a large family including seven brothers and one sister, they ran a small country store while tending a large farm. Doreen immigrated to Canada at the age of 24yrs in 1960 under the Canadian Domestic Workers Scheme. This was a program to rebuild the post-second world war era and increase Caribbean culture thru immigration of approx. 3000 black women to Canada. When she arrived in Montreal Quebec she was employed as a Nanny, caring for a wealthy family. She then married the love of her life from the same Caribbean Island (a cricket player) named Ornett Hackshaw and was blessed with twin boys Keith and Kenneth. While raising her twin boys, Doreen became head cook at the Children’s hospital in Montreal Quebec. A God loving well-dressed lady everywhere she ventured. She was always seen as a prim and proper lady, supportive loving wife and mother. After enduring several severe winters and almost 50yrs in Montreal, they decided to relocate to sunny Victoria BC, (closer to one of her twin boys Kenneth). Having fulfilled a very meaningful life and devotion to family, her commitment and love is emulated through her children. Her large family includes numerous surviving distant relatives in the UK, US and other exotic Caribbean Islands.

We thank you for your life decisions. We will always love you and miss you very much.

I would like to pass on a special thank you to the staff at VIHA home care, Ross Place Seniors Center, and Victoria General Hospital, for your hard work and dedication.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.
