He finally claimed his freedom from this earth, after a courageous battle with cancer, and is now forever resting in the arms of the Lord. He was born on May 13, 1953, in Cape Town, South Africa.

He will be greatly missed by his loving partner of almost 22 years, Henry.

Delwynne was predeceased by his loving sister Raine in 2014, his brother Trevor in 2013, his mother Joyce in 1998 and his father James in 1986.

He leaves behind his nieces, nephews and cousins: Tracey Joy Kennedy (and Antoinette), Deane Kennedy, Jacques Windell, James Coetzee (and Yolanda SA & Ursula CA), Wilna Manefeldt, Eugenie Grundlingh, Johan Hugo, Chris Windell, Christo Bresler, Christelene le Grange, Burna Kirsten, Colene Theunissen and Louis Lourens.

He often spoke of his parents’ support and guidance over these many years of studying.

In South Africa he worked as a High School Teacher, High School Guidance Counsellor and School Psychologist.

After completing his D.Litt et Phil degree in August 1993, he started his own Psychological Practice in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Delwynne and Henry met in Durban, South Africa, on November 5, 2000, and decided soon afterwards to make the big trek to Canada. They settled in Victoria, BC, in May 2006.

Shortly after arriving in Canada, he continued practising as a registered Psychologist with the Vancouver Island Psychological Services firm (previously A. T. Malcolm & Associates, Inc.) in View Royal, Victoria, BC.

Delwynne and Henry were avid travellers. Places they visited include Las Vegas, New York, Montreal, Zimbabwe, Germany and Switzerland, and also many trips back to South Africa. He also loved hiking and nature. They were always heading into the forests on weekends, taking in the fresh air and beauty of nature.

Delwynne was an esteemed singer, having sung the Tenor role in many performances, including Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Oratorio, Beethoven’s Mass in C major, to mention a few. He also sung with the Victoria Opera in Victoria.

He had a big generous heart and a kind soul who always wanted to help others. He wanted to make a difference and see people smile. It brought him great comfort.

A Funeral Service for Delwynne was held on Monday, August 8, 2022, at 10:00am, in McCall Gardens Sequoia Centre located at 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. A procession to the Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, will follow the service.

He’s no longer in pain and if love could have kept Delwynne alive he would still be here right now. I hope that in time you are able to draw some comfort from the fact that you both got to experience this great love!

I had the pleasure and privelege to be a colleague of Delwynne’s for several years at AT Malcolm/VIPS. He was a gentle, humble man who shared his insights and his dry humor generously with those around him. He was kind and encouraging to a fault. My deepest condolences to Henry and to all Delwynne’s family. May your cherished memories provide some comfort in the difficult times ahead.

Henry – my heart goes out to you and family members. I can’t find the right words to express the sadness I am feeling but please know you are in my heart and thoughts. Delwynne touched my life in the most wonderful way. I have such fond memories of great conversation and laughter with you both. Sending love and hugs.

  • Byron

Henry, I am so sorry for your loss. Delwynne was the most compassionate and kindest person I ever had the privilege of knowing. He embraced life and encouraged me to do the same in ways that I had never considered and that are easily overlooked. Nature’s beauty and how it can literally take your breath away, the joy of listening to or singing a song that makes your heart soar, and the gift of living in the moment in a world that can so easily be filled with what ifs and what comes next. My life is all the better for having known him and I will remember him not with sadness but with gratitude for how his kind words and counsel changed my life, and those of so many others, for the better.

  • Kathy
