Dave passed away peacefully in the morning of April 19, 2023. He was born on May 13, 1948 in Edmonton, Alberta. Dave is survived by his wife, Madeline; his children Chris (Lisa), Nicky (Dave) and Jill (Patrick); grandchildren Mariah, Annika, Gabrielle, Isabel, Evan and Madeleine; and brother Don (Helen).
Dave was gentle, witty and kind. Always active, he was an accomplished tennis, golf and cycling enthusiast. As an exceptional physician and hospital administrator, Dave impacted the lives of many. He lived and worked in Calgary, Victoria, Riyadh and Jeddah.
Dave and Madeline got married in 1974. Their love of travel and adventure took them all over the world. Having three children didn’t slow them down. The family fondly remembers time spent together in Kauai, Egypt, Palm Springs and various boating escapades through the Gulf Islands.
A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders.

Danielle Sykes Uncle Dave was an extraordinary person. He truly did live a life of adventure and I just loved listening to his wild stories as a child; even more so as an adult. He always made me laugh. He also had a huge heart and always cared how life was treating those around him; he always wanted to know how my life was going and would always have some great piece of wisdom to help you along. He was a genuine person and he genuinely cared. He will be greatly missed. Thinking of you all today and I wish I could be there to celebrate the wonderful and amazing life of David Newsome. Steve Wheeler Sandy and I were very sad to hear of Dave’s passing. He was a wonderful gentle man. An exemplary role model for his colleagues in the ER and a calm and thoughtful leader. We admired his courage as he tackled Parkinson’s disease.

Our paths crossed in life through our children and shared time in medicine.
Dave had a lovely balance of perspective, of caring, and wisdom in guidance. A wonderful person who touched many and left medical institutes better for the leadership which came naturally to him.

Ian Cordon Dave was a pioneer in Canadian emergency medicine with whom I had the privilege to work in Calgary, Victoria and Saudi Arabia. He was an excellent physician and later became an innovative hospital administrator who managed to retain his common sense and good humour.
He fiercely enjoyed his golf, and despite his Parkinson’s progressing he always refused to accept “gimme” putts, but would simply manage his stiffness or tremor.

Ken Fyke I am saddened to learn of Dave’s passing. Dawn and I offer our condolences to Madeline and family. I had the privilege of working with Dave in his roles as an Emergency Physician and as Vice President Medicine, Victoria. Dave was always a kind and compassionate person, who focused on quality service. His high level of integrity and ethical standards were always evident. It was an honour to have worked with him.
