It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather after courageously battling cancer for two years.
Born in Victoria, Dan graduated from Mt Doug High in 1968. He then attended Camosun College and UVIC, graduating with a Bachelor of Education in 1982, followed by a Masters of Education in 1991.
Dan quickly found employment with the Sooke School District in 1973, initially as a teacher and subsequently as an administrator. During the course of his 33 years of employment in District #62 he was assigned to various elementary schools. He enjoyed working with the staff, students, and parents of each school and developing the unique qualities inherent to each school.
In his younger years, Dan’s life revolved around hockey and he was fortunate to have the opportunity in the mid-sixties to play with the Victoria Maple Leafs, a farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dan was an avid hockey fan throughout his life; he particularly enjoyed attending live games in Vancouver and Anaheim.
Retirement provided the opportunity to spend more time at Cowichan Lake during the summers and down south in the winters. His initial interest in the Model A hobby was reflected with the ground-up restoration of a 1931 Tudor and a 1931 Roadster. Over time, Dan became involved with other aspects of the hobby: attending swap meets and regional conventions, organizing car games, writing exams to become a car judge, and even acquiring Model A fashions. Dan was a member of the Van-Isle
A & B Fords, the Vintage Car Club, and the Lions Gate Model A Club.
Dan will be remembered for his devotion to family, his positive attitude when facing life’s challenges, his disciplined work ethic, his advocacy for all students to be given the opportunity to learn in the way that best suits them, his love of animals, and his sense of humour.
Dan is survived by Ingrid, his wife of 49 1/2 years; daughter, Melissa (Dan); son, Chris (Erin); and grand-daughters, Ainsley, Reese and Emilie.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, April 19th at 2:00 pm, in the Sequoia Centre, at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Dr. To assist with planning, please RSVP to dyoungcelebration@gmail.com before April 16th.
Please consider a donation in Dan’s memory to the B C Cancer Foundation, 150-686 W Broadway, Vancouver BC V5Z 1G1.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Sheridan Family We heard the sad news and want to express our condolences to Ingy and family. Dan was our Kentwood Place neighbour and friend for over 15 years and we loved our over the fence chats as well as many street barbeques. He was always so proud of his Model A’s and our kids got to ride in the rumble seat a few times. Always full of local knowledge and anecdotes.
“A GREAT NEIGHBOUR”.Our thoughts and prayers are with you Young Family.
Love Wayne, Joanne, Kevin and Allison Sheridan xxxx

Tracy Green I knew Mr.Young when he was teaching at Willway. My brother had him as a teacher though I missed him by a year. However, as I grew up and began volunteering at the school, I got to see him from a more adult perspective, too. He was a man who helped inspire me because I saw his pride and dedication to his students. He will always have a special place in my memories. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Mr. Young.

Heidi Harms I knew Dan Young from Willway Elementary, as a parent, PAC President and employee (noon hour/bus supervision). Dan was always so kind and willing to hear all sides of the story, never judgemental and always there to support those who needed it. My condolences to his family.

Patrick Maier Please allow me to express my deepest condolences and sympathies regarding the passing of Uncle Dan. He was a great man who loved his family and raised outstanding, caring, productive members of Canadian society. He was always good, honest, generous and a strict disciplinarian, and was always happy to share his home with other members of our family. I deeply regret that he did not live to see me grow up to become a good man like him and my father. It’s too late to change the past but we can all honour his legacy by striving continuously to be the best people we can be every single day like he always did, working and sacrificing for the benefit of others, our great country and the world.
Everyone needs a bit of help sometimes, and Uncle Dan dedicated his life to helping others.
Rest in peace Uncle Dan, the world is a lesser place without you.
I have just learned of Dan’s passing, too late to reply to the notice for presence at the memorial unfortunately. I worked with Dan in more than one school and held him in the highest esteem as an administrator and as a human being. My sincere condolences to you, Ingrid and to Melissa and Chris. He will be missed by many.
