Chin-Fa (Kevin) Cheng, born on April 24, 1935, in Tainan, Taiwan, was a gentleman of few words but he had a wealth of humanity and wisdom. He exuded grace and generosity. He was giving and forgiving. His life was guided and cultivated by ethics and principles. Chin-Fa’s journey started with a humble beginning. Through determination, self-discipline and hard work, he overcame poverty and life’s hardships to advance himself. He mastered English through self-study which awarded him various career opportunities. He graduated from the first navy class in Taiwan and retired from the service.

Chin-Fa was a devoted sports fan, especially of baseball, and loved traveling, hiking, crafting, and listening to music. He never ceased to learn and explore. In the latter part of life, he became an avid photographer, a hobbyist baker, and was tech-savvy even in his 80’s.

Chin-Fa married the love of his life, Mei Chiao Hong, and nurtured their only daughter, I-Chen Joyce Cheng, both of whom pre-deceased him. In 1990, the family immigrated to Victoria, BC, Canada, a place he came to cherish and call home. He is survived by his much-adored grandson, Ethan Lin, son-in-law, Joe Lin (US), and older sister, Chin Chai Cheng (Taiwan). He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Thank you, Chin-Fa, for leaving your footprint in our hearts on this life’s journey. You embodied:

“Kinds of Power – Knowing other people is intelligence, knowing yourself is wisdom. Overcoming others takes strengths, overcoming yourself takes greatness. Contentment is wealth. Boldly pushing forward takes resolution. Staying put keeps you in position. To live till you die is to live long enough.” (Tao Te Ching)

“Good night, Papa Cheng!” (April 23, 2020). Rest in Peace.

Per Chin-Fa’s simple wish, his ashes will reunite with those of his wife and daughter in their favourite place in a private family ceremony.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.

I was deeply saddened by the passing of “Cheng papa”. I have known Cheng papa since the early 90s. He is the father of my long time high school friend, Joyce. Just like his daughter I have known, Cheng papa is a kind and genuine person who always shows great interest and desire for learning. He has great passion for photography and travel & always seems to have endless energy and enthusiasm.  Although the time I spent with Cheng papa was limited in the past years, I will always remember our shared conversations and memories.

My thoughts are with the Cheng family.
