It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Caterina (Rita) Scigliano on September 1, 2024. Rita was born on October 30, 1944, in San Giovanni in Fiore, a small town in the Calabria region of Southern Italy. She moved to Canada and married her husband Giuseppe in Vancouver. Shortly after, Rita and Giuseppe moved to the island and started their family in Victoria. Giuseppe left us too soon, in 1997.

Rita is also predeceased by her parents Pietro and Teresa, her sisters Rosina and Marietta and her brother Saverio. She is survived by her sister Angelina and her three sons, Francesco (Jennifer), Renato (Melissa) and Marcello (Janai). She was so proud of her grandchildren Carly, Siena, Rocco and Marcus and her face lit up whenever she talked about them.

We are so grateful to the staff at the Heights at Mt. View, where Rita resided for the last ten years of her life. It warmed our hearts greatly to hear her community express to us how much she will be missed. We are also comforted by the fact that she is now resting in peace, dressed in her best, nails and hair perfect, drinking her favourite root beer and cappuccino and enjoying some mortadella, provolone, and dolci.

A small family service will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Parish, 4049 Gordon Head Road, Victoria, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 11:30 am. Rita’s final resting place will be with her husband Giuseppe at Royal Oak Burial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Baptist Housing Mount View Heights Care Society.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

It has been a privilege to have spent time with your mom over the past years. We have spent many hours together over espressos, lunches and shopping. Your dear mom was never so happy as when she was talking about her family. Her precious sons were her focus of topic every time we spent time together. I have heard countless stories of her very dear grandchildren. Who were so important to her. We spent hours together finding the perfect birthday or Christmas gifts for all.

I cherish the memories of your mom singing Italian songs during our drives.

Thank you for all my lovely memories dear Rita I will dearly miss you.

My prayers are with your entire family as you remember your precious mother.

Rita will be remembered forever by us at The Heights as such a sweet and loving soul. She was unwavering in who she was until the very end, always gentle and welcoming to whoever came to her door. It was a gift to get to know her and care for her. She will be deeply missed by all.
