It is with great sadness that I am announcing the passing of Wayne, my beautiful husband of 45 years. Predeceased by his son Daniel. A strong and kind man who leaves his loving daughters Crystal Carlson, Ashley Apted, and son-in law Justin. “Papa” will be missed greatly by his precious grandchildren David, Kye, Summer and Ava. He leaves behind his brother Gary and nephew Matthew Carlson (Chelsea) along with many special family members and friends. Angelene Janusonis (Rick), sister-in-law Deborah Browne (Bo); nieces, Tara Beier (Dennis), Morgan Wright (Sean), Nicole Gendive, and nephew Dr. Sebastian Browne (Marijn).  Albertan cousins Stan Carlson (Brenda) and Larry Carlson. Most importantly Wayne leaves behind his lifelong friends Ron Warren and Ken Weiss.

Wayne’s story

Born in Victoria, BC and raised on Vancouver Island, Wayne spent his life enjoying the beauty and nature that surrounded him. He spent his time fishing, hunting, swimming, and riding his bike. He was the little boy that delivered the early morning papers before school for many years. Living in View Royal and graduating from Esquimalt High School, he went out into the world to experience his life. After travelling to Australia and working there for many months, he found his way back home. In 1978 he met and married his wife Jeannie while she was nursing in Vancouver. Moving away from the Island was life changing for Wayne. He attended Pacific Vocational Institute completing a trade in Welding, working on one of the largest Oil Rigs “Ocean Bounty” stationed in Nanoose Bay (1982). Flying to work by helicopter daily from Vancouver was quite an experience! Soon after their daughter was born, the couple decided to move back home to Vancouver Island to be close to family, where they both grew up. They settled, raising both their daughters, Crystal & Ashley. Wayne worked in the Shipyard industry (Seaspan, Dockyard & Yarrows) for many years as well Security in our banks and hospitals. After his retirement he found his niche working part time at French Beach where he met travelers from all over the world. One of Wayne’s strongest values was family. He spent time coaching ball, summer vacations on the lake and travelling to Mexico and Europe.

We are thankful for the excellent care Wayne received over the past two years. Being diagnosed with a rare disease took many doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals to support him throughout his journey. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Swiggum and staff at the Heart Function Clinic, Dr. Michelle Mezei (UBC Neuro- Genetics), Cassaundra Raposo, Dr. Shannon Houston, Dr. Adrian Yee, Dr. Todd Yip, Nancy and team (LLC) as well as many other specialists involved with his care.

There are no words that can express the love & gratitude we have for the Innomar Nurses and the Island Health Sooke Home Care Nurses. Your expertise and skills helped Wayne to heal and keep moving forward with a positive attitude even with all the challenges he faced. Thank you for the joy you brought him. ❤️

    Dear Jeannie and family,

Thinking of you as you walk down the path of sorrow after
Wayne passed on. I remember Wayne as a kind and gentle soul
who loved his family so much. He was security at the hospital
ward I worked on and we always had lovely chats about family.
The patients adored Wayne as he would have nice conversations
    and crib games with them.
Rest in peace Wayne. You are dearly missed.
My my loving thoughts and hugs always,
    Diane, Steve & family

Jeannie – My sincere condolences to you and your entire family. I worked with Wayne for many years during his Dockyard days in our shop. ( You may remember me as a customer for some of your Mexican art sales many years ago ). Wayne was always quick to point out something he didn’t think was right or fair ( whether in-house or halfway across the world somewhere ) and wasn’t afraid of being vocal about it. At the same time however, he had a great lighter side and was always up for a good laugh. We had plenty of laughs at work over the years. As luck would have it, you and Wayne moved to the Sooke area as did I quite some time ago, so Wayne and myself were still able to see each other and yak from time to time long after our Dockyard days ended. Stay strong Jeannie, and keep Wayne with you in your daily thoughts. Best regards, Garnet Saunders

Over the years I had the pleasure of knowing Wayne when working the shipyards and later meeting him once and awhile when shopping in Sooke.
He was always enjoyable to shoot the breeze with and Im sure he will be missed by many.
My condolences to his family and to all those with whom he touched with his kind cheerfulness.

Dear Jeannie and family. I think of Wayne most days and remember all the good times we had when we were younger. The six mile pub and so many more places we both frequented over the years. The trips to Reno Nevada in our bachelor years. Neighbours for years and friends for my entire life from 16 yrs on. All the gatherings at Dorthy
and Carl’s. I am so glad that I was able to visit him in the last days before he passed. Condolences from Ken, Kathy and Erich Weiss.

  • Ron Warren

    Jeannie, Crystal & Ashley,
How sad David and I were to read of Wayne’s struggle with hATTR and of his passing. We remember him just as you said – a kind, loving, family-first man. My guess is he would want you to focus on the happy times so he can live on in your stories of him- accompanied by smiles and laughter. Kind thoughts to you all,

  • Elizabeth and John Carlson

Dear Jeannie, Crystal and Ashley: John and I just recently heard about Waynes’s passing. Our Glenn loved him dearly and often referred to him as his “other brother” ; he so enjoyed their weekly phone calls. I know he would have been devastated to learn of his death. But we are sure that they are reunited in Heaven, having a good laugh, talking about their favorite sports teams, and reminiscing about the good times they had together when they were able to visit each other. We send you our sincerest condolences .
