It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jack Bragg, who departed this world peacefully on May 27th. Born on May 2nd, 1937, in Victoria, BC, Jack was a cherished husband to Margaret for 62 years, a loving father to John, Mark, and Shelly, a proud grandfather to Kimberley, John, Ryan, and Jenna, and a beloved great-grandfather to Anthony and Ella. John was predeceased by his sister Joan. He is also survived by other loved family members.

Throughout his life, Jack was known for his kindness, compassion, wisdom, and dedication. He attended Esquimalt High School and held fond memories of his time at Camp Bernard as a Queen Scout, where he was mentored by Freeman King.

Jack had a distinguished maritime career as a Marine Captain. His career began in 1953 when he worked as a central registry clerk for the RCMP E Division Head Quarters. In 1955, he transitioned to the RCMP Marine Division in Vancouver, where he rose to Sergeant of a detachment class patrol boat. He was stationed in Prince Rupert in 1958 during the “Centennial Riot”. In 1962, he received a commendation for bravery for rescuing two fishermen from a sinking vessel under hazardous conditions. While in the RCMP he moved regularly, from Prince Rupert to Vancouver, Gibson’s Landing, Victoria, Salt Spring Island, Ocean Falls. In 1967, he left the RCMP to pursue his master’s certification and joined the Canadian Coast Guard. He packed up the contents of the family house in the cargo hold of the Alexander MacKenzie and shipped them and the family to Prince Rupert.

In 1969 he moved the family back to Victoria and worked on Naval Auxiliary Vessels where he had some interesting adventures when he worked aboard the Laymore and Endeavour including a voyage to Hawaii. From 1972, he spent ten years working for the Canadian Merchant Service Guild, representing federal government ships officers. He moved the family to the North Delta area of Vancouver in 1974. In 1982, he served as Captain aboard a passenger ferry between Vancouver and Nanaimo before joining the Department of Public Works as Captain of a BC coastal marine facilities repair and maintenance vessel. In 1991 he moved to Victoria, and worked for the DND as Master aboard Canadian Forces Auxiliary Vessels as well as Dockyard Marine Pilot before retiring in 1996.

Jack was a Past Master of the Camosun Masonic Lodge #60. In his leisure time, he loved riding his motorcycle, spending time on his sailboat, and enjoying adventures with family and friends. During his retirement, when he was not traveling or golfing, Jack volunteered his time with the Greater Victoria Marine Air Safety Society.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
