It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, brother, uncle and friend Bruce at the age of 71. He was predeceased by his parents Mickey and Barney, his brother Brian and his twin infant children. He is survived by his son Bram, his brother Terry and his nephews Darren and Keith.

Bruce lived life on his own terms. He brought his vivid, whimsical and wonderful thoughts to life through his folk art, short stories and calligraphy.

During his time with the Society for Creative Anachronism, where he was known as Cathal Sean O’ Connlauin, he was a founding member of the Barony of Seagirt, received many awards including Laurel, and taught many in the ways of calligraphy and Celtic knotwork.

He will be missed by many.

Due to the current pandemic a celebration of life will be held when it is safe to gather again.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Sorry to learn of Bruce’s passing. I knew him from his work at two bookstores in Sidney. He was always helpful and usually had a good story to tell. I recall his interest in mermaids and if I came across something about mermaids I’d pass this along to him. He is an irreplaceable character. I’m glad I got to know him a little. My thoughts are with your family.

My friendship with Bruce began in 1978 at Kosta’s where he was a Greek dancer smashing dishes while he danced. He was a character I will never forget. We spent many hours over the years talking about the Fantasy books we both loved and shared. Bruce was a talented artist who created whirligigs that I sold at my business and that I purchased for special friends. He was always interesting. We will miss you Bruce

I knew Bruce as Cathal Sean. Many a class I had with him, many a time I spent jawboning, many a wise word we exchanged. He was a multi-talented man who offered his service, adding beauty to the world and knowledge to the thirsty. He will be missed my his many/many SCA friends and by those he taught. They now teach others, spreading his talents and insights into the world. My empathy goes to you, his family. Many thanks for helping him become the man he was.

Much sympathy on your loss. I knew both Bruce and Master Cathal – I am fortunate enough to have a Cathal scroll in my home along with a gift whirlygig. He was an original spirit, full of creative energy and kindness and always ready to share his skills.
I was greatly saddened to learn of his passing. (((HUGS)))

    Bram and Pieta,

We have fond memories of Whirligig and waiter Bruce.
I the 1980’s he made an amazing life like one of Lorne when he was driving bus for Grey Line and he holds 1 bus in each of his hands and the wind used to catch them and turn his arms around.
The face he painted of Lorne with his big mustache was true to life at the time.
My whirligig has me riding my bike with a long favorite skirt on. I have real earrings in my ears. The spokes on the bike turned the ‘gig’ around.
Both of these we brought in from outside many years ago and they sit on an inside window ledge as 2 wonderful folk art pieces.
    Visiting children love them.

Thank you also for crazy memories of wild dinners at Kostas in Market Square where more than 1 plate ‘hit the deck’. Opps, too much Retsina.

Bruce, may you find your peace now.
