Blaine Maxwell passed away peacefully after a brave and courageous battle with cancer on December 24th 2020 in Victoria, British Columbia at age 61.

Blaine was born on June 29th 1959 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  He was predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Joyce, and his brother-in-law Carter Newson.  He was a loving husband , father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his wife of 37 years Beverly, daughter Sarah (Jeremy Stow) and son Bradley (Sarah), Campbell River;  granddaughter Georgia Stow and grandson Clayton Maxwell; brother Darrell (Annie) and sister Heather (Hal) West; mother and  father-in-law Steven and Debra Newson; nieces and nephews, Chad (Samantha) West, Ryan (Melissa) West, Jason (Elise), Lindsey (Lukas), Madaline and William Newson; sister-in-law Anita Newson and brother-in-law Daniel (Rebecca) Newson.  He will be dearly missed by Aunts, Uncles, cousins and many close friends from coast to coast.

Blaine spent his childhood in Upper Sackville, NS.  He attended Maxwell school in his early years before graduating from Sackville High.  Blaine married Beverly in 1983 in Bedford, NS.  It was at this time that he started his career in IT Service Management.  Blaine with Bev by his side, started the first of his adventures by heading off to Yellowknife, NWT.  Shortly after the birth of their first child, they returned to the Maritimes where they raised their family.  Blaine’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open a nature store in Moncton, NB.  During this time, he completed his MBA from Université de Moncton. His adventurous spirit led Blaine to Victoria in 2015; closer to his children and grandchildren where he was able to enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Blaine was known for his warm spirit, kind and cheerful outlook.  He loved meeting new people, and had a genuine interest in chatting and learning about everyone. Blaine had a ceaseless curiosity about the world around him. He was an automotive enthusiast, loved exploring the outdoors, nature and travelling the world just as much as he enjoyed exploring close to home with his wife, children and grandchildren.

A Funeral Service for invited guests to attend in person was held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Saturday Jan 2, 2021 at 11:00 am. A recording of the service can be found below.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency, Victoria, BC or a memorial gift can be made to a nature trust or conservancy of the contributors’ choice.

When I first met Blaine (in 2015) it didn’t take long to figure out his intentions were always good, his interest in people genuine, his curiosity honest… My friendship with him formed through work. He always put people first – taking care of his people was his number one goal in the office. Many hours were spent over a drink – talking, laughing, contemplating life. And oh, the stories he would tell! (I honestly don’t know how he remembered ALL those stories!) It sure was easy to learn a thing or two from him. I know I learned some things from him I didn’t know I needed to learn, and for that I’m grateful. I also had the great fortune to travel with him, and experience his adventurous nature. I have many fond memories from that trip that I will cherish. As has been said, he was a caring and generous man, and I feel lucky to have had a chance to know him in this life. My heart goes out to Bev and the family he leaves behind. Blaine was a good man, gone far too soon. Peace be with you, friend.

  • Caroline Anderson & Tamas Zsolnay

Bev, Tom and I are so sorry for your loss. We have so many wonderful memories of getting together with you guys at the University Club, through Newcomer’s pub nights, potlucks and just enjoying your company. Blaine was an exceptional man with a caring, inquisitive and gentle nature. Please know that we are sending healing thoughts your way. Love Caroline & Tom.

  • Anita Newson

    Bev, Sarah (Jeremy & Georgie), Bradley (Sarah & Clayton);

As Daniel has said, Blaine was more a brother than brother-in-law and was always there for our family in good times and bad. Blaine was always willing to lend a hand whether it be for another move or whatever project was underway. His love of nature and adventure was certainly shared and encouraged in Sarah and Bradley. I believe he was starting the love of nature with little Georgie too as you had some lovely times exploring hiking trails and beaches with her and from the smiles on her little face you can see she thoroughly enjoyed her adventures with Grampy. Both Georgie and Clay seem to have inherited Blaine’s love of life and positive character as they both seem to be enjoying every second of life. Words are not always sufficient to express how important someone has been in your life but everyone who ever met BLaine, even for an instance, was made happier for the experience. Thanks for the wonderful memories BLaine. Love Anita (sister-in-law).

  • Bernadette MacNeil

    Bev & Family,

My deepest condolences to all of you. I didn’t know Blaine well but what I did know was that he was a warm, friendly person who was a wonderful husband and father, and could make an outstanding coconut cream pie:) So very sorry for your loss.

  • Gina Meijer

I am sad to hear of Blaine’s passing. I worked with Blaine at BC Pensions for a few years. Blaine was friendly and positive and had a twinkle in his eye when he talked about family and nature and the Maritimes! Blaine was genuinely interested in other people. I would often seek him out in the minutes before and after meetings just to have a chat about humanity. My condolences to Bev and Blaine’s family.

  • Elle Herron

  • Janice and George Mucalov

We are so very sad to hear of Blaine’s passing…
Bev and Blaine were “newbies” to Victoria at the same time we were. We only knew Blaine for a few short years — we were just getting to know him better! But in that time we shared with he and Bev, he was always smiling, cheerful and positive.
The last year, Bev and Blaine inspired us to really try and live, despite the pandemic. They lived life more than most people. And Blaine lived with courage and grace.
    We will miss him…
Sending big hugs to Bev and the family.

  • Sue Webb

I miss Blaine, as I am sure everyone that knew Blaine feels the same. However, I will always have the many memories of our times together. Anytime that we got together, we laughed and laughed, sometimes to the point of tears. We acted like teenagers, played silly games, and always enjoyed a good drink. Blaine always reminded me to see the good in the world and to have a positive outlook on life. I am a better person for knowing him and I am happy to carry him in my heart for the rest of my life. Rest easy my friend.

    Dear Bev,
Blaine was such a good friend to Brad as they navigated their way through Sobeys together as the new guys. If there was one great thing that came out of Sobeys, it was gaining 2 good friends in you and Blaine. We were so fortunate to continue this friendship in Halifax and shared many happy days together. We had hoped one day to get to BC to enjoy the ocean, mountains and wine but cancer unfortunately had other plans. We have missed you both so very much in Nova Scotia and will forever miss Blaine and his smile in the future. Thankfully your kids and grandchildren are close by now. This past year looked as if it held many special moments for you all. I hope you all will comfort each other and know you have friends near and far that are holding you all in our hearts during this time of grief. XO
