Adrian Franck (née Hill), 86, of Courtenay, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2023, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria.

Adrian was born on May 10, 1936, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her formative years were spent in South Africa in the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Cape Town. Adrian attended nursing college in Oxford, England and emigrated to Canada in 1959 to take a nursing position in Ottawa, where she met Jürgen Franck, who would become her husband in 1962.

Adrian and Jürgen would later move to Alberta, where they settled first on an acreage just outside of Sherwood Park, and soon after on a quarter-section near the Village of New Sarepta. Adrian took well to farm life, supported by her love for nature and her ability to figure things out she had never done before (without Google). Shortly after Jürgen’s passing in 2002, Adrian moved to the Courtenay, BC area, where she stayed until her passing.

Adrian will be remembered for her strong desire for social interaction and ability to maintain meaningful and long-lasting friendships wherever she happened to be. Her adventurous spirit would eventually lead her to every continent (yes, even Antarctica). She was a great lover of animals, especially dogs and horses, and had a tolerance for cats. She had a strong volunteer spirit in every community that was lucky enough to have her. She loved games, music, and theatre, and anything that seemed like it would be a fun time.

Adrian was predeceased by Jürgen, her husband of 40 years. She is survived by her 3 sons, Jens (Nicole Boudreau), Ian (Mary De Paoli) and Peter (Leila Kelleher); her 5 grandchildren, Noah, Esmé, Christian, Thistle and Emmett; and her brother Robert.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 26th at Comox United Church, beginning at 11 a.m.

Donations can be made to the Open Heart Society of British Columbia, 1580 Pembroke Street, Victoria, BC, V8R 1W2.

Shared ideas and laughs in our book club for years but
I think of Adrian as one always keen for adventure. In India there was an evening boat ride in the Ganges or daily game drives or by elephant in search of the elusive Bengal Tiger. She was a good sport and will be greatly miss.
